southsider2k5
Joel Sherman @Joelsherman1 Hear exclusively Alex Rodriguez was playing with re-tear in surgically repaired hip Likely going for another surgery #Yankees (cont) A-Rod will miss at least piece of '13. Hope is surgery will allow for successful player again for #Yankees So #Yankees now dealing with both Jeter and eventually A-Rod coming back from surgery. Desperately need left side IF help
southsider2k5
Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal Source: A-Rod re-injury occurred before playoffs. Was on pain medication throughout #Yankees' post-season. Pain so severe MORE after one of DS games, he had to be taken to emergency room and spent night there. #Yankees

Seems like this is just lost time, and it's not like you could get ARod to pass a physical for a trade in this situation.
southsider2k5
Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN Source: Problem for Alex Rodriguez is in his left hip -- not his surgically-repaired hip. The Yankees are thinking he'll be back in June. Joel Sherman @Joelsherman1 Surgery will be done early in new year, recuperation time is 3-6 months. #Yankees hope A-Rod is back in June as a full player
witesoxfan
ARod breaking the all time home run record was once considered a formality but is anything but that any more. He needs 116 over the next 5 seasons, which averages out to 23 homers per season. And, considering the injury risk ARod has become - the last time he played 150 games was 2007 - he might not even make it through the end of this contract. Arod has $114 million reasons to try to do so... Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN It's worth a mention: By the time the season starts, the Yankees will have a 37-year-old 3B who's had major surgery on both hips, owed $114m. southsider2k5
Jon Morosi @jonmorosi Cashman acknowledged that A-Rod labrum tears are "not typical" injuries but declined to speculate about possible PED link. Most significant detail I heard during Cashman press conference: This A-Rod surgery "more extensive" than last one

Right. He is just going to walk away from $114 million. Reynolds is an idiot.
Dick Allen
I heard it was the other hip, not a re-tear. I wonder if his "one year" of steroid use has anything to do with it.
YASNY
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 4, 2012 -> 12:05 PM) Right. He is just going to walk away from $114 million. Reynolds is an idiot. He did mention that the Yankees carry insurance that would pay 70% of ARod's salary, so maybe ARod doesn't 'officially' retireso he keeps getting paid, but in fact is effectively finished. ptatc
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 4, 2012 -> 12:06 PM) I heard it was the other hip, not a re-tear. I wonder if his "one year" of steroid use has anything to do with it. Not usually. PEDs usually effect muscles and tendons in the short term. It's usually not the static structures like cartilage. However, there is no telling what the abnormally increased strength does to the other structures indirectly. There is also anecdotal evidence that the brain is also effected. The growth factors are centered in the brain. I still think many of the post-concussion syndromes from former football player ie. Dave Duerson has a link to a combination with PEDs and not just the concussions.
ptatc
QUOTE (YASNY @ Dec 4, 2012 -> 12:03 PM) On MLB Network's Hot Stove, Harold Reynolds just predicted an ARod retirement due to this 2nd hip surgery. The injury really isn't that serious of a surgery. They just go in a remove the loose material. I'm not sure where they get this "major surgery" bit. If he retires it's because he doesn't want to do the rehab.

That is a really long time for hip arthroscopy. Edit: Nevermind I just looked it up. It wasn't just a labrum. The was a bone impingement and a cyst as well. ptatc
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 25, 2013 -> 05:51 PM) His contract is insured. They really would like him to miss the entire season. Were they able to insure the whole thing? That was one of the problems with some of the long big dollar contracts. Sometimes they could only get a portion insured.
