caulfield12
It looks like it's going to finish with just over $5 million, but that's not bad at all considering it's only expanding to 1,000+ screens. Some of the predictions were overly optimistic, with just over $9 million, but that probably wasn't realistic. Plus, for 16-30 year old boys/men, it's competing with the NCAA basketball tournament. The per screen average is almost twice as much as admission, the Paul Rudd/Tina Fey movie. I think the word-of-mouth will really carry this movie well, and lots of repeat viewings as well. In fifth place, the Disney-girls-gone-bad entry Spring Breakers snuck ahead of the Tina Fey/Paul Rudd comedy Admission, though neither are headed to huge grosses. Spring Breakers earned $2.1 million from 1,104 theaters, while Admission had to settle for sixth place and $2.06 million from 2,160 locations. Each film is looking at a $5 million weekend — a gross that makes sense for a strange art piece like Spring Breakers, but is simply embarrassing for a mainstream wide release with two A-list leads like Admission. Fortunately, Focus Features only spent $13 million on the production. www.ew.com/movies From what I've read, Admission's supposed to be a very "smart/clever" movie, but maybe that's not what most audiences are really looking for these days.... In sixth place, the Disney-girls-gone-bad film Spring Breakers found $5 million from 1,102 theaters. The A24 release has garnered massive publicity thanks to the allure of seeing onetime Disney starlets like Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens (who, granted, didn’t have a squeaky clean reputation) traipsing about in bikinis while wielding guns, but the deeply strange R-rated art piece, which also stars James Franco, confounded many young moviegoers this weekend, and word-of-mouth is destined to squash Spring Breakers‘ hopes of mainstream success. Still, the film cost only $2 million to produce, and it should ultimately become a profitable venture for the fledgling studio.www.ew.com Disagree here. Think it will end up being hugely profitable over time...especially in places like here in China, where you now have to pay .75 to $1.50 to download a movie at youku.com, tudou.com or funshion.com. Not to mention DVD sales, and when it comes to cable, HBO/Showtime/Cinemax and Pay-Per-View. A lot of people probably won't go to watch it in the theatre but are curious, in the same way many women were shy to see MAGIC MIKE, for example. While it wasn't able to break out, A24's Spring Breakers still made an impact at the box office this weekend with an estimated sixth place take of $5.0 million. The much buzzed about low-budget film starring James Franco, Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens earned a solid $4,529 per-location average from 1,104 locations. With the addition of last week's strong platform performance, Spring Breakers has grossed $5.41 million to date.www.boxoffice.com A film that you probably weren’t aware even existed, starring Lindsay Lohan, Michelle Rodriguez, and Adrien Brody (the man has an Oscar, remember?) and directed by Vince Offer — a.k.a. the ShamWow/Slap Chop infomercial pitchman (and occasional prostitute beater) — just had one of the worst box office debuts since The Oogieloves in the BIG Balloon Adventure. The movie, called InAPPropriate Comedy, earned $172,000 from 275 theaters this weekend, yielding a wretched $625 per-spot average. According to its IMDb description, the Freestyle Releasing film follows what happens when “a computer tablet full of the world’s most hilariously offensive apps breaks through the borders of political correctness, stirring up cultural anarchy.” www.ew.com Edited March 24, 2013 by caulfield12

caulfield12
http://www.boxoffice.com/articles/2013-03-...-level-activity Still getting a hang on the disconnect between social media and how/if it equates to boffo box office... Olympus Has Fallen had comparatively little social media buzz, tepid reviews, but managed to be the only successful action film of early 2013, especially compared to the 19th Die Hard movie, which had 5X the promotions and advertising behind it, seemingly. caulfield12
http://movies.yahoo.com/news/movie-stars-j...-011557359.html How new movie "stars" like Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain and Ryan Gosling are defining or redefining stardom... Gone are the days of Cruise, Pitt, Roberts, Meg Ryan, Reese Witherspoon, Stiller, Sandler, Will Ferrell and Jim Carrey making $15-25 million for one picture. It's interesting 15 years ago, Robert Downey's career was in the toilet (and drug rehab) and Depp was never truly famous worldwide until the Pirates movies. Will Smith's about the only one has sustained success over the last 20 years, and even Smith's career is trending downwards a bit the last five years. The last really good movie he was involved with was Pursuit of Happyness. Leo DiCaprio's another interesting example here...or Russell Crowe. There's a huge difference between being a talented actor and a proven box office draw. Then there's the "Anne Hathaway" backlash movement. Kyyle23
I disagree about Depp not being famous worldwide. He had Edward scissorhands, fear and loathing, blow, sleepy hollow, from hell, Donnie brasco, Ed wood, Gilbert grape all under his belt before he ever put on Jack Sparrows costume. And 21 Jump Street, but how many of those films you listed played around the world? Maybe Sleepy Hollow or From Hell, but many of the other ones are considered more art/indie movies (Fear and Loathing, Ed Wood, What's Eating Gilbert Grape) with niche audiences or followers of Tim Burton as much as Depp (like The Corpse Bride voice work). Edward Scissorhands, Blow and Brasco (or even Once Upon A Time in Mexico) were successful, but not $100 million plus blockbuster films. So they have to be $100 million plus successful to make him a star known around the world? Interesting, Seems like there is only a short list of well known superstars around the world. I stand by my point, he had a long successful career that gave him a lot of notoriety around the world before he ever became Jack Sparrow
caulfield12
He left the series for a return to the big screen. In 1990 he had two movies released....John Water's Cry Baby and Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands. Scissorhands was the first of many collaborations between Tim Burton and Depp. For the next 15 years Depp, built a solid reputation for making quality movies with limited box office. That all changed when Depp took on the part of Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Pirates was a monster hit and turned Depp into one of the biggest movie stars making movies today. Pirates V will be in theaters July 2015...I am hoping that it will be much better than the fourth part. http://cogerson.hubpages.com/hub/Johnny-De...nd-all-the-rest I'll give a different definition, then. A decade, or even 15 years ago, if you made a salary of $10 million plus to headline a movie, you were in a very elite category. Johnny Depp, as well liked as he was for some of his quirkier roles, was never close to that. You could make the same argument about Robert Downey, Jr., before Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes. No argument they are both very talented actors, but hardly global brands until those respective movies for Depp and Downey.
Kyyle23
wait, I am wrong about his global recognition because some random blogger named Cogerson(with 689 followers) said so? His box office take doesnt necessarily prove global recognition. It definitely proved that disney made a hugely successful bunch of films, which I do not deny, but it doesnt prove that nobody knew who he was outside of the US until he became Jack Sparrow. 21 Jump Street and his small part on Nightmare on Elm street gave him plenty of recognition before he started his bromance with Burton. The guy was mr Teen Magazine for every year 21 Jump Street was on.

caulfield12
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Mar 27, 2013 -> 06:38 PM) I dont disagree with that, but he wasnt an unknown outside of the united states. "star known around the world" "unknown outside of the united states" there's a lot of territory in between those poles... even if I threw out the international box office numbers for those movies before Pirates, you would still argue he was a star known around the world...what is that opinion based on? have you lived outside of the US and seen the reaction of foreign audiences to him on a press junket or movie premiere? Q rating in other countries? What's a high enough score to demarcate star from superstar, which is what he clearly became after Pirates... The original premise of the article I quoted about Gosling/Lawrence/Chastain is that he (Depp) is one of the 3 biggest movies stars in the world today, along with Will Smith and Robert Downey, Jr. Was Robert Downey, Jr., also known all around the world before Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes? Steve9347
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Mar 27, 2013 -> 06:35 PM) They just cannot get this character right on the big screen. What a travesty that film looks like. How hard would it be to give a real run at the Weapon X storyline and re-launch Wolverine properly? Instead, just more bulls*** characters in bulls*** locations and bulls*** Hollywood storylines where there's 40 years of badass stories to take from the comics. Unbelievable.
