Watched the newer Total Recall the other day and it finally hit me why most movies today bore the crap out of me. They aren't about the story line anymore, they are about the special effects and action. The former Total Recall's acting was awful, as were most of the effects, but the storyline was so much better. They actually kind of oscilated you on the thought that Quaid was or wasn't having his mind screwed with by the Recall process, or he actually was a spy/revolutionary. The new version seemed to be about gunfights, chase scenes, and blowing some things up. Visually it was way better. Mentally it was awful.

I felt the same way after seeing the Great and Powerful Oz. Visually it was great, especially with the special effects. The story was awful. Contrast it to the original Oz, or even the broadway production of Wicked, and you can see an amazing storyline. Wicked was incredibly well written, and was way more entertaining, even with the massive limitations of seeing it live on stage.

Anyone else feel the same way lately?

Couldn't agree much more. I've felt this way for some time but then I'm old, so what you expect? Computer graphics look incredibly fake and 3D effects though sometimes visually stunning (Avatar) bore me.

Has anyone seen Oblivion? Thoughts?

Visually, it's impressive. Beautiful cinematography, definitely an IMAX experience.

However, the plot has so many holes, it's almost impossible for me to explain even if I wanted to intentionally spoil the movie.

Cruise still has it at age 50+, and Olga Kurylenko is easy on the eyes (she wasn't at her best in Quantum of Solace, and she's also in the new Terence Malick film "To the Wonder" with Ben Affleck)...but there's just that "soul" or rooting interest that's missing from the film.

It's interesting to watch, but impossible to really get invested in the characters.

Life of Pi was the closest to Avatar in terms of visuals (I think that was intentional, and recall someone working on both projects?)...and, that said, it still was missing SOMETHING that's hard to put a finger on.

From Alice's Adventures in Wonderland on, it's been disappointment after disappointment.

I would still argue that How To Train Your Dragon is the 2nd best 3-D movie since Avatar.

That would be 2 s***ty fantastic 4 movies.

A reboot is happening, the director of Chronicle is making it, Josh Trank.

I think I said it before, but those FF movies are the worst. The 2nd one is extra awful.

Hopefully the reboot goes well.

The second one is awful. How can you screw up the Silver Surfer that bad? At least he looked cool

Comic book movies right now are just awesome. As good as they have ever been.

They just need to go back and fix Green Lantern.

DC has no choice. If they really want to go through with Justice League, Green Lantern has to be fixed, he is a central figure in JL. They also have to figure out how to make a Wonder Woman movie that people will want to see. I dont think the Flash will have many problems though.

Wonder Woman seems like it would be a tough movie to make. Why do all the DC characters seem harder to make movies about?

Green Lantern actually should be one of the easier.

A lot of DC heros were given God status. Marvel dealt with a lot of normal people put into extraordinary circumstances. The game has changed in the movie presentation of these comic characters, Batman was the game changer. Nolan presented it as a realistic movie, and people gravitated to it. Marvel is a bit more on the fantasy side, but the movies still have attempted to stay grounded.

Green Lantern was just awful

I never saw it, because one look at the trailers made it obvious the movie was complete s***.

there is probably an amazing drinking game tucked away in that movie

I went ahead and watched it when it was on a free preview. It was as bad as you could imagine. It was a joke.

Meanwhile, the Flash was already covered wonderfully in the short-lived 1990 tv series. I remember as a young 7-year old being obsessed with it, even though it probably sucked.

I loved that show too. The first season was good, second season it just faded out.

Did anyone see PAIN & GAIN yet?

Having read the 30+ pages story by Collins at the Miami New Times on Friday, I'm more interested to see how Bay has twisted the real life, facts are stranger than fiction story to suit his "dramatic" needs.

The biggest change has to be the character played by The Rock, who wasn't close to a major player in reality.
