Iwritecode
If I could get DirecTV for less than what I pay for cable I would make the switch in a minute. I've checked their packages and it would be cheaper for the first 3 months. Then they start charging for HBO, Showtime, Cinemax and Starz. I can't seem to find a package that doesn't include those channels.

Kyyle23
I most likely will never go back to comcast ever again. When i moved from Schaumburg to sleepy hollow, they charged me 450 dollars to move my service. that was moving the service and installation fees for the same thing I had in Schaumburg. That is great customer retention right there, I tell ya. Plus, the triple play package I had went from 139.00 a month to 259.00 a month in the 3 years I had comcast. I have had Directv since 2009, and my bill has changed roughly 2.00 more, and that is because of county taxes. f*** COMCAST

RockRaines
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 2, 2013 -> 01:24 PM) Speaking of TV provider customer service, man oh man do I love DirecTV. Just got off the phone with them after 45 minutes. My 2 year contract expired last week and I called to see what kind of promotions were available. The first guy I talked to offered me a few things, a free HD-DVR box, 10 bucks off a month, some additional content for basically free, etc. But I wasn't thrilled with any of them. Because I didn't like what he was selling HE offered to send me to the retention department where they "have more room to work." Talked to the guy in the retention department for 25 minutes, not haggling, but just talking about what they wanted to GIVE me. I didn't ask for anything other than "what can you do for me?" At the end of the day I basically got treated as a brand new customer with additional incentives. I got the Genie system (sadly i signed up with them like 6 months before that launched), I got the new customer pricing, an extra 10 bucks off hbo and showtime, I got Sunday ticket free (2nd time in 3 years) and I got to keep my current 2 receivers (in addition to the 2 new genie boxes) without having to pay the 6 bucks a month for each. All and all, a VERY happy customer. I LOVE it so far. Besides the almost 200 dollar savings and superior technology (the genie f***ing rocks), lets talk about installation services. I have an old house in historic Oak Park. Half of the house is an addition that has been wired for several services over the past several years. First the directv guy gets there and tellls me I need all new wiring. Cool, it makes sense. He looks at the dish network dish and wiring and said, wow, why did they do it this way. He then removes the ugly dish from the front of my house and takes out their horrible wiring. He then hides my DTV dish in the back and smartly wires my 5 rooms so that you can barely see anything externally. Some of my rooms are hard to wire, then guy doesnt flinch, comes up with great ideas and even tacks it to walls/hides it internally where needed. He then puts my splitter in a central location so I have minimal delay. The guy cleans up and is gone, such great service. Comcast guy comes to install just internet in one room. Looks at cable coming from pole to house "thats old", begins to replace. No big deal, replaces the run from the pole to the house and the slack is such that its hanging down into my yard. He tells me he will fix that later. he then follows some of the DTV guys wiring and starts to eye a place to drill a hole through my house. I ask, cant you just put it back through the plate that the DTV guy did, its already hidden and sealed. "No, then you wouldnt know which one is which". Seriously, he said that. finally I convince him to do it and it looks decent, but he didnt hide any wires on the side. I completed this work for him later. He then says he is done and begins to pack up, I had to ask him again to take out the slack on the wire hanging head height into my yard. He makes me sign the thing and starts to leave and I notice its not working. "give it a few min". Reluctantly I let him go and 6 hours later I am back on the phone with Comcast trying to fix my service. Finally I get it working after going through 3 different foreign techs. The service has been night and day so far.

They actually give a s*** what it looks like at the end of the day. As I posted many months ago - I love the Genie and I adore DirecTV. It's also nice that every picture is true HD and not compressed like s***ty Comcast.

I had a good deal for first two years through DirectTV website as new customer. Try that. Here's a tip for HOA's. They are always interested in lowering costs. Our's is locked into Comcast because of ugly dishes on units. HOWEVER, we looked into getting DTV for the entire building at a HUGE cost savings. We were only a couple of votes short in the first go round. The dish usually goes in one central location.

I figured, you know, that if you move and keep their service, then maybe they would waive those installation fees that they lay on you when you start new service. Of course, i was wrong. But, now I am happy with Directv, so all is good.
Jenksismyhero
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 2, 2013 -> 02:18 PM) 140+ channels for $54.99 LINK I'll pay $74.99 for the choice extra classic, hbo and showtime, sunday ticket, HD/DVR/whole home network and 4 boxes (a genie, genie mini, HD-DVR and regular HD box). In a year it'll go up $40 bucks ($30 for the cable package, $10 for hbo/showtime), although the guy on the phone told me to call the retention office a year to the day my install is complete and they'll hook me up with some other kind of promotion for the hbo/showtime stuff. Over the last two years i've had a reminder to call basically every 6 months (around when a promotion ends) and they will always hook you up with 5 or 10 dollars off a month for 6 or 12 months. My only complaint with them was my original directv install. They did an ok job, but the choices the guy made were kind of messed up and my wife was home at the time so I had to live with it. For starters he put the dish on the front of my house. There's nothing in the way so there's really not a good reason why he did that. Second, he ran a cable from the dish all the way to the back of my house to go to my basement. We have a chimney back there and for some reason he dropped the cable down the left side of the chimney, 2 feet away from it, then a foot off the ground he ran the cable across the chimney base, and then another few feet until he hit the spot to go into the house. Why he didn't just put the cable on the right side of the chimney is beyond me. I'm hoping the guy that comes to install the boxes in the other rooms will fix it for me. Y2HH
Anecdotal evidence is anecdotal? I have had DirecTV and Comcast in my life, I don't find the customer service of either to be particularly good, but as it stands, since I need Comcast for Internet service, there is no compelling reason to need two providers when one can do the job. I have the following: (About 5 of each of these channels) HBO SHOWTIME STARZ MAX ENCORE REDZONE/Sports Package Extended basic, which means every channel not considered premium (which I have all of) 2 HD DVRs (the new tiny xfinity ones) 1 standard TV connection for my bedroom TV Modem with 50mbit/10mbit Internet Phone 149$ a month AFTER tax. If DirecTV could come close to beating that when I add in the cost of Internet service, I'd switch. When they had the chance to match that offer, they couldn't do it. So ... DirecTV sucks and Comcast rules.

People I have talked to in my area have lots of problems with satellite when the wind picks up, which isn't good living so close to the lake. I know many people who got Dish, and had to switch back because they lost TV every time it stormed.

Then I realize how easy they make it to find shows and set recordings and series recordings on the app or on their website. So I do it. The entire experience is just fantastic. We haven't even touched on the fact that you can record like 8,000 things without filling up the DVR and 5 things at once (super handy on Sunday nights).
