People dont understand how rare it was to go through the season without a loss (given they didnt have a bowl game). Illinois has only done it 3 times. They had to motivate a team to play hard and dedicate themselves without a bowl game or conference title game to go to, and they responded by having the 6th undefeated untied team in the school's history. I completely understand why they wanted to give them a reward. Luckily the "division title" game them the ways to do it. Its too bad for those kids there were bad apples and a dumbass Gene Smith to ruin their bowl chances last year. He REALLY needed to send them to the Gator Bowl I guess.
