2nd_city_saint787
Trevor's a former highly touted pitching prospect out of the Angels organization who's struggled lately. Drafted in the 8th round of the 2007 draft. By age 20('09) he was already in AA, where he made the All-Star team, the Futures Game, played for team USA and was named Angels Pitcher of the Year. Playing for team USA he went 2-0 with a .69 era and tied the 3 decade old record of 11 Ks in a game. After his 09 season he was ranked the 4th best prospect in the Halos organization by Kevin Goldstien, behind Mike Trout, Hank Conger, and Jordan Walden. Goldstien noted he could make the rotation as early as 2011 as a 3rd starter. From Kevin Goldstien at Baseball Prospectus Year in Review: Last year's breakout player reached Double-A as a teenager and more than held his own. The Good: It's rare to find a pitcher so young with two plus secondary offerings. Reckling's fastball has average velocity, but it plays up due to the pitch's sinking action. Both his power breaking ball and highly advanced changeup project as true big-league out pitches. He's a fantastic athlete for his size, and he fields his position well. The Bad: Reckling's command can completely abandon him at times, due to a combination of a complicated delivery and his inability to control the extreme break on his pitches. With his velocity, some wonder if he'll be forced to pitch backwards as he moves up the ladder. Ephemera: Big-league reliever Dennis Sarfate is the only player in major-league history drafted 268th overall to record a big-league win. Perfect World Projection: Reckling projects as a good third starter. Path to the Big Leagues: Reckling is moving quickly, and he could force his way into a rotation shot by 2011. Timetable: Reckling could begin the 2010 season as high as Triple-A, still two months short of his 21st birthday. I see trade rumors where he was going to be the key piece in a Roy Halladay trade. 2010 started his downfall. Between stops at AA and AAA(which he may have been rushed to) he posted a 6.42 era with a 1.73 whip..Ouch... He rebounded somewhat in 2011 with a 3.73 era and a 1.4 whip in 17 starts at AA. Baseball Reference says he started at A+ in 2012 and had terrible control issues, walking 15 in 6 innings...I found this on an Angels fansite about his 2012 performance Trevor did not look good. Last week he did well in his first two innings when he came into a game but fell apart in his 3rd inning of work. Tonight he started and loaded the bases in both the first and second innings, hit a couple batters, couldn’t find the zone, same struggles he was having in his last outing. He looks like he is rushing, he’s definitely thinking too much and trying to aim. I have some photos that I have taken of his first two outings and his release point is up way too high too. I’m sure they are making adjustments and will have a better idea of what he needs to work on but I haven’t seen someone this off in a long time. I’m thinking it’s more in Trevor’s head than anything else. I hope he gets it straightened out, he is a very likable kid. I've been following him on twitter ( @TrevorReckling ) and he seems like a great kid, still on 23, and I'm really rooting for a rebound. The top pitching prospect in the MLB seems to think he can do it.... Taijuan Walker @tai_walker All my followers please go follow a risng star @TrevorReckling hes bouta do big thngs this year Follow him please Luv yall @TrevorReckling He's a high school teammate of our very own Hector Santiago and they have been working out together this offseason..... He also seems to have/support a line of clothing that includes this pretty rad Santiago shirt... Perhaps working with Coop and his old high school teammate can get him back to his former self. Hard to project where he's gonna start this year at but AA seems like a good bet.....He'll be a very interesting prospect to watch. If he rebounds we could be looking at yet another potential SP piece for the future. Edited January 21, 2013 by 2nd_city_saint787
