I guess then we can look at all the games the defense won over the years, when Cutler and the offense did everything to lose.

Everyone keeps talking about this great Bears offense, but didn't they win more game with Lovie and his D?

The defense got old and injured, it needs to be remade

. @ESPNChiBears asked Trestman about Mel Tucker's future. Answer to follow.

"I don't want anybody to read into anything into we're doing. Everything is on the table, we're going thru thoughtful methodical process."

Trestman said Briggs checked to a blitz on 4th-and-8, Conte didn't get the call, he was in zone.

Sooooo, even if he didnt get the check to a blitz, didnt he still f*** up? He is the safety, if he was in a zone shouldnt he have followed Cobb instead of sitting down up front and releasing Cobb behind him?

If he thought they were in a zone then wouldn't he have expected he had help over the top if Cobb kept going?

The safety is usually the "help over the top" though, unless Wright was supposed to cover either side of the field

But from where he was playing he wasn't set in an "over the top" position, he was up close to the line. That would seem to me to suggest the over the top help would have come from somewhere else - perhaps a LB dropping back or one of the CB's?

His position at the time of the snap suggests that if he was supposed to drop into a zone, he wasn't covering the deep zone.

Yeah, and IIRC, the play call change was happening really late, right as the snap was happening.

I think we can assume the play called asked something different of Conte than normal Cover 2 deep coverage. He thought he had the flat, which means he probably thought they were in Cover 3 with corners and Major Wright in deep coverage

That does seem like a fairly reasonable call for a 4th and long, to note.

He started in that position, he ran up to Cobb and then let him run past. Honestly, it isnt reasonable to ask Wright to cover both sides of the field in that call. You cant flush Rodgers like that and have only one guy playing center field

Why? We saw why

Presumably in the call someone else was supposed to release over the top, perhaps the CB playing to the outside of Conte. Instead if that CB got the blitz call and went into man coverage, staying with the receiver on the sideline, it removed the help that Conte would have had in the original playcall.

Right, I'm assuming we had three deep on the original zone call -- two CBs and Wright. Conte was to cover the flat near the first down marker. I wouldn't think too deeply about the wisdom of that call since we audibled out of it...there's some chance it was never intended to be the play we actually stuck with.

Yeah, that's the standard Cover-3 defense, the CB's cover the left and right deep passes while the FS covers the middle and the SS covers the 5-10 yard area in the flat. Conte would then be responsible for covering Jones and Bowman should have gone deep with Cobb and with some help in the middle from Wright. Conte misses the call and appears to be sitting right where he would in a Cover 3.

Well, according to Bowen, you arent correct. I will defer to him. I dont see how Bowman would be the one to cover the inside portion of the field that Conte vacated, that is just terrible

Bowen's breakdown is from Monday, but he does mention a coverage change and the defense not all being on the same page in the comments.

edit: to clarify, the Bears changed to a Cover 0 blitz, but the original call may have been Cover 3, which is exactly what Conte played.

Why would they change the play at the line on a 4th and 8?

Edit: NVM, original play was cover 3, which in that case, doesn't make a ton of sense given the situation.

Meh, the Bears avoided a wildcard exit. With that terrible defense, there were going nowhere fast.

Getting in is pretty important, even if you feel your team doesnt have a shot. Nobody thought those same 7-9 Seahawks were going to maul the Saints like they did a few years back, but they did.

People also didn't think the Saints would be as bad as they are on the road.

It's been especially evident the past few years, but New Orleans is an awful road team.
