let's also remember...if Slausson is going in at LG, he's a huge upgrade over Rachal right out of the gap. The question then winds up being whether Carimi is a real downgrade from Louis. If he is, then they'll need to think about moving someone like Scott there or drafting a RG. The comparison isn't Slausson vs. Louis, its Carimi vs. Louis and Slausson vs. Rachal.

A very good point.

How amazing would it be if someone like Warmack fell to the Bears (think how decastro fell last year) and we took him? Our OL would be upgraded at every spot outside of center.

Hell, why not add a center in the 5th or 6th? A guy like Braxton Cave or Joe Madsen could end up being an upgrade over Garza who some have called the worst OC in football the last 2 years.

Bushrod-Slausson-Cave-Warmack-Webb/Carimi/Scott.

Use your 2nd and 4th on an LB and corner then your other 5th or 6th on a WR or DT.

Drafting a top center in round 2 would be a great idea. Then make Garza a guard again and get more flexibility.

I'll raise this issue again; it's entirely possible that Garza has reached a point where he'd be terrible if he were moved back to guard. Not only has it been several years since he played there, but his play at center has been trending down.

That's a good point. It's also possible that we will try to get him out of the lineup entirely.

For everyone suggesting we draft multiple lineman in the draft, seems to me we now have 8 guys under contract with a high probability of being on the opening day roster:

Bushrod

Slauson

Garza

Carimi

Scott

Webb

Williams

Brown

Honestly, we just need to add one interior lineman in the draft and we should be set for next year. Obviously long-term there are still issues, but this isn't going to be an overnight process. Bushrod definitely helps though and if Carimi and/or Webb can step up this year, we might be in better shape than we all think.

A little bit of NFL news and notes

Matt Flynn traded to the Raiders for a 6th round pick.

Raiders also signed Tracy Porter to a one year deal

Carson Palmer soon to be traded to the Arizona Cardinals

Bears have released DT Matt Toaeina and G Nick Peischal. Toaeina was due to make 1.125 million this year and will count as 500k against the 2013 cap.

The Carson Palmer trade to Oakland has to go down as one of the worst in NFL history.

Especially considering how much better it made the Bengals. They lost an albatross contract, a severely declining and unhappy quarterback, and gained first rounders and the chance to put their QB of the future in. And he rewarded them with consecutive playoff appearances

@RapSheet: Details of Palmer trade: Cardinals get Palmer, send Raiders a cond't 7th in 2014. Teams swap 6th & 7th this year. Raiders move up 43 spots

@AdamSchefter: Cardinals QB Carson Palmer agreed to restructured 2-year deal scheduled to pay him $16 million. It also gives Cards an out after one year.

Good god. So to include the 6th and 7th pick to raiders, does anyone have what they fully gave up for 2 years of Palmer?

From his wiki

"the Bengals received Oakland's first-round pick in the 2012 draft and a conditional second-round pick in the 2013 draft, which would have become a first-round pick had the Raiders reached the AFC Championship game in 2011."

So a '12 1st, '13 2nd, and '13 7th for a year and a half of Carson Palmer, a '13 6th, and a conditional '14 7th (assuming Palmer makes 13 starts for Arizona)

That pick in 2012 turned out to be #17, the Bengals drafted CB Dre Kirkpatrick with it. He appears to have missed most of the season.

Eh, lots of guys don't play their first year (for any number of reasons) and then come back and end up being solid. Can't judge that yet.

For Bears 1st round offensive lineman, they miss their first year due to injury and then forget how to play football.

Palmers numbers with the Raiders

8-16 record

35 Tds

30 ints

60% completion percentage

43 sacks

9 fumbles

2012 - Late and Close - 53.2 QBR, 27-45 passing, 312 yards, 0 TD, 3 INT, 1 FumL

2012 - 1st quarter - 67.1 QBR 58-103 passing, 767 yards, 1 TD, 4 INT

Sorta backing up what I remember - when the defense was trying, and the score was pretty close, Palmer was pretty terrible. A lot of his numbers came in garbage time, not that it's all his fault.

LOL ESPN talking about Urlacher returning to Chicago because George McCaskey left the door open.

I'll laugh my ass off if he comes back for $1.5M

If I am emery, 1.5 million becomes the contract after all incentives are met, not the base contract before incentives. Brian isn't worth that right now
