Steve9347
QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 09:34 AM) He's a slot receiver, his production is decent for a #3 considering he's never been in a system where there's 4600 yards of offense to go around. That's when he plays of course, as soon as he got the new deal he gets hurt every other week. There is not much to be gained in cutting him this year, though, at this point in the (off)season. The injuries are the entire reason this conversation is happening.
lostfan
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 10:36 AM) The injuries are the entire reason this conversation is happening. His salary is too much to be a healthy #3, let alone one who plays 9 games a year, so unless he plays all 16 this season I would be surprised if he's on the team next year, given how many guys are on the last year of their deals. Balta1701
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 10:36 AM) The injuries are the entire reason this conversation is happening. I like how when someone points out he's played double-digit games every year of his career, you pretend that's equal to calling him a "Stud" (your words) while when someone exaggerates how often he gets injured you agree with it. LittleHurt05
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 08:25 AM) NFL Cracking Down On Celebrations Again Obviously because football is too fun. "As first noted by Pro Football Talk, reports out of multiple camps have officials warning players that they intend to more strictly enforce the unsportsmanlike conduct penalties already on the books. That includes: sack dances; home run swing; incredible hulk; spiking the ball; spinning the ball; throwing or shoving the ball; pointing; pointing the ball; verbal taunting; military salute; standing over an opponent (prolonged and with provocation); or dancing." Just waiting for a playoff game to be decided on an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty due to excessive celebration.

If he can stay healthy enough (and yes, we'll see) I think he'll be the guy who benefits more than anyone from a Trestman system. Marshall isn't going to get all that many more chances, but the hands/possession guy in the slot, that's the guy who should be freed up to do a lot of damage in a west coast system. I called him a stud based on the can't cut status around here. There's no exaggeration going on with how often he gets injured. Anyone who pulls "games played" with Earl Bennett to argue that he's not injured very often clearly doesn't watch or pay any attention to the Bears. lostfan
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 10:39 AM) If he can stay healthy enough (and yes, we'll see) I think he'll be the guy who benefits more than anyone from a Trestman system. Marshall isn't going to get all that many more chances, but the hands/possession guy in the slot, that's the guy who should be freed up to do a lot of damage in a west coast system. Bennett was all but ignored last year, but also he was pretty unreliable when he was actually on the field which isn't like him. Marshall if anything is going to have many less targets than last year. A lot was made of Cutler excessively targeting him last year but that was just the way the offense rolled, Cutler didn't trust Hester with good reason, Davis was a joke, Bennett didn't get used, and Forte's pass-catching was ignored. When one guy has that much volume in an offense it's bad (see Forte 2010-2011 and the "pay the man" crowd not understanding how this is a drawback when justifying giving him a Brinks truck full of 100s). I'd guess that Marshall will have a similar or even larger number of targets....but that's because I expect the Bears to have a whole lot more plays on offense next year. I'd expect the %age of targets going to Marshall to decrease.
lostfan
QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 10:46 AM) I don't understand what will be accomplished by cutting him right now. Nothing. You develop Anderson this year to replace Bennett next year for dirt cheap, then trade or cut Bennett in 2014. Ideally by then Wilson's developed into a NFL-ready player, or is close to it, and you draft another WR project - Emery likes to do this.
lostfan
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 6, 2013 -> 10:50 AM) I'd guess that Marshall will have a similar or even larger number of targets....but that's because I expect the Bears to have a whole lot more plays on offense next year. I'd expect the %age of targets going to Marshall to decrease. Similar, I'd agree, larger, I doubt it. Cutler had ~3000 yards last year. Marshall had 1508(! that has to be some kind of record). I'll pencil Marshall in for 1400, 100 receptions and change. Martellus should have about 300 more yards than Davis . Forte should have about 150 more yards than he did last year, which puts him in line with where his career totals have been prior to last year (not his career highs under Martz). Earl Bennett is good for about another 150 with increased use. Jeffery should be primed to take The Leap but I'll be conservative and say he'll be short of 1000 yards, and add 500 more yards. That puts Cutler at about 4000 yards for the season plus assorted scraps off guys like Anderson and Wilson - totally within the realm of possibility considering he did 4500 in a similar system with less balance than this one. There is more room for Marshall to have more yardage, but I was also conservative on Martellus and Jeffery.
