How many free agency years is that buying out, 2?

According to B-Ref, just one year

edit: Also includes two club option years that could make it 9/70, so there are year 2 & 3 of free agency

I know I like to tease about him, but seriously, how is Travis Wood so good? His stuff is nothing special, but he's had a dominating season.

I would like to point out that in August of 2002, Cory Lidle put up a 0.20 ERA in 45.1 IP and he gave up 23 hits during that time frame. During his career, he put up a 4.57 ERA and allowed 1400 hits in 1322 innings.

Pitchers get hot and lucky. This would be far more annoying if the Cubs were in the playoffs or soemthing.

So Travis Wood is gonna fly into a building in July 2017?

These are the numbers after the initial cup of coffee in roughly the first full year's worth of plate appearances

.271/.347/.483/.831 - 648 plate appearances -

Prince Fielder

.282/.344/.482/.826 - 532 plate appearances -

Anthony Rizzo

The Rizzo deals seems like a big risk for a guy who hasn't even spent 1 year in the majors yet w/ the Cubs. I mean, in his 3 years of arb coming up, he would't have gotten anywhere close to $40M, unless he turns in to a perennial all-star 1B over that time.

People far smarter than you say there's very little risk to this investment. If he shows no improvement it's still a deal.

Yeah, most people are thinking "Do you think Rizzo will regret signing the deal a few years from now"

I haven't followed the Cubs as closely this year as in year's past, but when did they start leading the NL in extra base hits? Thankfully their bullpen was a mess the first month of the year and they haven't been able to hit with RISP, or else they'd have a pretty good record.

The risk is way less in a contract like this than someone like a Chris Sale.

That was the cup of coffee. He hasn't been able to adjust. The two I provided had some time up initially and struggled, and then adjusted. Atleast that's what I tell myself.

There's obviously inherent risk, but there are indications that this could work very well for Rizzo.

I'm still confused as to why the collusion that resulted from the whole San Diego being f***ed by two buddies goes unpunished.

Was San Diego going to play Rizzo as a DH? They like Yonder Alonso better in that ballpark. Also, Andrew Cashner has looked pretty damn good so far this year. Granted, it was a deal made between friends but it wasn't completely lopsided.

It isnt as if Rizzo has a Soriano albatross contract. It is a long contract, and he is paid well but not outlandish. It will most likely work out for both sides

I look at the Ryan Howard deal. If I recall correctly, Howard made south of $1 million for 3 straight years. He was then awarded upwards of $11 million for the nect 3 years in salary arbitration. Rizzo's arb numbers could be fairly high if he's as good as they think. It's a no brainer for the Cubs.

Cashner gets injured at a Jim McMahon type clip that is what made the deal bad.

3 of the first 4 Cubs hitters have hits off of Matt Harvey, ouch

How much confidence do you have in Edwin Jackson holding that lead?

Actually...can't believe it, but Edwin Jackson's still "only" 29. It seems like he has been around forever...well...because he has.
