This is one of those deals that will look really bad the last couple of years. I know he is one of the best but almost 26 million for a 37 year old pitcher? nickofypres Posted March 29, 2013 Share Posted March 29, 2013 Long term pitching deals always work in the long run. 24M (Fielder) + 16M (Sanchez) + 22M (Cabrera) + 25M (Verlander). $87 million into 4 players is a terrible business plan, despite how good those players are. Especially players who have body types that love to get big (Fielder and Drinky), an average pitcher and a guy who has 1550+ innings before age 30. Not to mention Jackson, Scherzer, Fister, are all entering free agency in the next 2 years or so. I get that they're pretending to be a big market team, but there are better ways to go about it. See Dodgers last year (and this year) Detroit slowly eeking into that territory. Verlander not a Free Agent pickup, but still massively paid contract for a superstar. That will be the biggest issue. They really need to be able to replace those players (at least some of them) from within if this whole thing will work out.
