Verlander extended for 7 years $180 million, with an option year that could make it 8/202.

This is one of those deals that will look really bad the last couple of years. I know he is one of the best but almost 26 million for a 37 year old pitcher? Unless it's really front loaded, it will be hard to work with.

Hah, if we signed Verlander to this deal, we'd be super stoked

We may well have signed a younger pitcher who will be just as good for $60 million through the time he'll be paid $180 million.

Long term pitching deals always work in the long run.

24M (Fielder) + 16M (Sanchez) + 22M (Cabrera) + 25M (Verlander).

$87 million into 4 players is a terrible business plan, despite how good those players are.

Especially players who have body types that love to get big (Fielder and Drinky), an average pitcher and a guy who has 1550+ innings before age 30.

Not to mention Jackson, Scherzer, Fister, are all entering free agency in the next 2 years or so.

I get that they're pretending to be a big market team, but there are better ways to go about it.

I'm not a religious man, but I do believe in Baseball Gods and they don't look too kindly on trying to buy championships... See Dodgers last year (and this year)

Detroit slowly eeking into that territory. Verlander not a Free Agent pickup, but still massively paid contract for a superstar.

We get the first five years of Sale for about what one of Verlanders top dollar years will cost.

interesting Twins note. Gardy said Joe Mauer is going to bat in the #2 slot.

I dont know how long that is going to last, but that is a pretty big departure in Gardy's convention wisdom (speedy guy #1, bunty guy #2, Mauer #3)

also, best of luck to all AL Central'ers this year. :cheers

That will be the biggest issue. They really need to be able to replace those players (at least some of them) from within if this whole thing will work out. You also didn't mention Victor Martinez, who they may want to extend after this year or at least replace by that 2015 season.

They have enough DH's under contract for now.

They seem happy to have the most horrific defensive corner infield ever assembled. Knowing them, they'll want to make VMart a C again and sign yet another DH to get the old man a title.

Alex Avila has been at least average offensively 3 of the last 4 years, and he's been awesome in 2 of those years. He's going to be the catcher of the future there.

Not to mention his dad works in the front office, right?
