caulfield12
Valverde records a 1-2-3 9th inning as the Tigers beat the Royals. Scherzer hasn't looked the same as he did the 2nd half of last season. Both him and Verlander are throwing noticeably less MPH on their FB's so far this year.

Leonard Zelig
I was looking around on baseball reference at the 1985 Tigers who started the season 35-5. In August of that year, they played a double header on 3 consecutive days. Between July 31 and August 14 they played 6 double headers.

caulfield12
Nice pitching match-up in Motown for the early start. Verlander vs. Shields for 1st place, Verlander 91-94 MPH in the first inning, averaging 91-92 still.

Verlander vs. Shields for 1st place, Verlander 91-94 MPH in the first inning, averaging 91-92 still. Very strange, never in a million years would have thought of Torii Hunter as an ideal #2 hole hitter. Trying to bunt Austin Jackson over to 3B early. Funny to hear Ryan Levebvre say how the White Sox have issues because they have to jump over 4 teams already, even if they're only 3 GB. Didn't realize Hunter and his agent were the ones who approached the Tigers about him joining their team. Pretty cool for the Tigers to have the type of organization that's known for its drive to get back to the World Series and a winning culture. "winning culture" = $$$$$$$ They gave a 37 year old $26 million, so let's not act like Hunter sacrificed anything

Leonard Zelig
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 25, 2013 -> 05:43 AM) Don't you mean 1984? Yes, '84, but that wasn't the point. Would the union even allow that kind of thing now? I mean having to use 6 starters in 3 days? And who knows what it would do to a bullpen.

Well, probably there's some situation where they would allow minor leaguers to be recalled (24 hours) for a couple of those starts in such dramatic circumstances now. I guess it hasn't come up often in the last 20-30 years.
witesoxfan
Ryan Levebvre or whatever is proving how much he knows about baseball. I feel the same way about Bert Blyleven and Dick Bremer when they talk about standings in April. Nobody gives a f***.

caulfield12
Rondon was throwing 98 or 99 MPH, but the only pitch he could get over the plate was the FB. Moustakas even managed to turn around a straight fastball for a double down into the RF corner, and he's struggling about as badly as anyone in baseball right now. caulfield12
Interesting series with the Braves and Tigers matching up. Austin Jackson has cooled off, thank god, but Hunter/Cabrera/Fielder still raking. BJ Upton still at .150. Victor Martinez seems to be a bit rusty, too. At .189, knew it would take a couple of months or even half a season to turn things around and get his timing back after the long layoff. (Check that, listening to the game and the Tigers' radio guys are claiming that Victor is really starting to come around recently.) caulfield12
QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 26, 2013 -> 06:22 PM) Anibal Sanchez with great stuff tonight. He had a string of 7 K's in 8 outs going there. Martinez's bat has come alive, at least tonight. Sanchez and Fister don't get all the pub, but they're the two key starters who seem to consistently pitch well. Scherzer's actually had a bit of a rough start. Last year in the 2nd half, he was probably a Top 5 starter in the AL, maybe second to only Verlander.
