Are we talking about the same guy? Ervin Santana didn't pitch in the '05 World Series. He did pitch in the '05 ALCS against the Sox. He had a terrible outing though: 4.1 innings, 3 hits, 6 runs, 5 earned, 2 homers, 3 walks, 2 K's, and a hit batter. He's definitely been inconsistent over the last few years, the Royals got him for next to nothing, but taking on his $12M salary is and was a huge risk.

Guthrie has been great. The Royals dealt Melky Cabrera to San Francisco for Jonathan Sanchez. Cabrera went on to have career year (before being suspended for PEDs) and came back to KC and won All-Star Game MVP on our field. Meanwhile Sanchez was even worse and more disliked in KC than Luke Hochevar. In true Royals fashion, they kept running him out there. He was getting booed mercilessly just walking out to the mound. Somehow the Royals got somebody to take him, and got Guthrie, who was having a terrible season for the Rockies. Considering Melky's suspension and terrible start for the Jays this year, and Sanchez was even worse for the Rockies last year and Pirates this year (he was just released), that Melky-for-Sanchez trade doesn't look too bad. I am a little concerned that they gave then 33-year-old (now 34) Guthrie a 3-year deal for $25M.

Yeah, I meant AL Championship.

Guthrie was one of the names bandied back and forth when we were looking at pitching last year and ended up with Liriano instead.

The board was 90-95% getting Guthrie. Beware the Coors Field Effect on pitchers.

A few thoughts here:

• Whether any of them besides Verlander have a chance, it's neat to see four Detroit Tigers starters on the list. If you're a fan from another AL Central city, feel free to replace "neat" with another word of your choosing.

No Sale or Addison Reed.

No Sale or Reed because the White Sox are 4 games below .500. These are based not on percentages of winning the Cy Young but by whom people have bet on to win the Cy Young as of May 7th.

Sounds legit

This article had me even a little bit excited about the Indians and their future under Francona.

And, of course, the parallels one can draw with Ventura's situation of "how long will he stay?" or "Is his heart truly in it 100%?"

Does his managing performance even matter if there is no one at the stadium to watch it?

CLE has a much better RECENT (90's and early 2000's) tradition of fan support and sell-outs.

If he can keep that team in Wild Card contention in the 2nd half, at least during the core summer months...I think it will pick up.

They had 5000 walk-up for a Friday or Saturday game recently when the weather was nice.

And a much worse recent (as in the last 5 years) tradition of not showing up to games

That's because of 1994 (CLE/DET/KC/Cincy/CHW/PIT were all hardest hit and took the longest time to recover from the strike).

Then Dolan tore apart the late 90's team in around 2002 and finally the core of the 2007 team as well.

That's three seismic events that would devastate almost any fanbase.

They weren't affected by the strike. At all. They were 4th in attendance in '94 and 2nd in attendance in '95. They then sold out like 5 million straight games.

The 2002 thing certainly did have an effect, and that is probably exhibit A as to why you don't go into sudden rebuild mode. The Indians have won the division and been in the postseason exactly once since that point in time.

And they really didn't sell off the 2007 team. They got off to a slow start and then traded Sabathia because they weren't going to be able to retain him, but he was really the only piece they lost. It was primarily everything working itself over the course of a 2 year period - they were 5 games better than their Pyth W-L in 07 and 4 games worse in 08.

BTW, I don't believe any team has ever gotten less in such a short period of time for two Cy Young winners as the Indians did for Sabathia and Lee.

I noticed a lot of empty seat over the weekend against the Twins. here are the announced attendance numbers:

Fri night: 20,200

Sat afternoon: 17,830

Sun afternoon: 14,015 (but it looked under 10k)

Please PM this to Caulfield for his comprehensive review. Title the file "Hrbek's Greatness" and make sure it is encrypted

By the way, who would actually want to see the Twins play, compared to about 20-25 other teams in MLB?

If those were the numbers against the Red Sox or Yankees, you'd have a much stronger point.

Wow, Oakland just got totally screwed. Hit a homer with 2 out in the 9th down a run at Cleveland and it was ruled to be in play for a double. Replay clearly showed it was a homer but for whatever reason, umps did not change the call.

It's Angel Hernandez, of course he can't get the call right. I'm watching this on MLB Network also, truly a horrible call.

Twins have 14 runs through 7 innings. That's about 70 innings worth of runs for the Sox.

Meanwhile, Pedro Hernandez continues his dominance against the Red Sox in his career.

Wow, just about the entire A's dugout stared at Angel Hernandez as he walked off the field.

That was just awful.

Do umps not get certain angles? Not that it should've mattered.
