witesoxfan
Those are not very strong numbers for the PCL, but more depth at 3B is not a bad thing at all. Soptic was intriguing, being able to throw 300 MPH and all, but his numbers weren't promising and he's not going to be anything more than a reliever. Princess Dye
Evidence of a new emphasis on contact rate with stable OBP It's not at all a stretch to say Gordon Beckham should take notice. After all, Keppinger was not etched in stone at 3B from the organization's comments. And they need a lefty bat somewhere, no question. I'd love to know what they really really think about Keppinger at third versus second..defensively Edited February 22, 2013 by Jose Paniagua
witesoxfan
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Feb 22, 2013 -> 11:25 AM) Gillaspie is out of options. Is he a guy that's going to make the roster? I think he has to. Soptic isn't a great prospect but he's promising enough that you don't give him up for nothing, and Gillaspie's promising enough that he would get claimed by someone on waviers. If nothing else, this all but guarantees that Morel starts the year in the minors and perhaps they are in the process of shopping him as well. witesoxfan
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Feb 22, 2013 -> 11:34 AM) So does he start off the year platooning with Keppinger at 3B? And then if Beckham never turns it around Keppinger moves over to 2B? That has to kind of be the thought behind it. Bring in a LH 3Bman who can spell Keppinger enough. Kepp has not been good against righties in his career. Another point to make about this...Gillaspie does not have good power, but he has pretty good discipline. Doesn't strike out a ton, walks a bit, and he does hit for a decent average. As was mentioned above, I'd look for him to primarily "platoon" with Keppinger and to play primarily against RHP. Hopeful he can be a .750 OPS player (or better) in that situation. Anyone have word on his defense?
winninguglyin83
According to Baseball America: 2009 -- Giants #7 prospect. 2010 -- #17. 2011 -- #17. 2012 -- #13. 2013 -- no longer rated in top 30 and third on SF minor league board -- behind Adam Duvall and Chris Dominguez among SF minor-league third basemen. maggsmaggs
Very good BB to K ratio. Hopefully he can be a serviceable utility player. We need more high-OBP players anyway. If D is good, definitely a better fit than Morel. Him and Sanchez should be the two utility infielders with Wise in the OF.

Anyone have word on his defense? From Mike Newman a year ago (link): Conor Gillaspie is your classic tweener with little left to prove at the minor league level. One can’t help but be at least a little impressed by his contact tool, but Gillaspie’s power and defense lag behind. He’ll never unseat Sandoval at third base in San Francisco, but even venturing to write another team would bite on Gillaspie as a starter based on his current skill set may be stretch.
