ptatc
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 22, 2013 -> 12:30 PM) It also has a lot to do with what they think of Brent Morel if you ask me. I still think that by the end of the year, Morel will be the starting 3B with Gillaspie the left handed back up and JK as the super utility guy. Provided Morel's back is healthy of course. BigEdWalsh
QUOTE (knightni @ Feb 22, 2013 -> 12:57 PM) This is a solid move. Gillaspie has real potential. Agreed and I really like the fact that he's not gonna strike out a ton.
Rowand44
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 22, 2013 -> 11:27 AM) Those are not very strong numbers for the PCL, but more depth at 3B is not a bad thing at all. Soptic was intriguing, being able to throw 300 MPH and all, but his numbers weren't promising and he's not going to be anything more than a reliever. Oh c'mon, he could not throw 300 mph. Balta1701
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Feb 22, 2013 -> 04:14 PM) It's just hedging their bets is all. You just can't count on a back being stable though Morel feels good now. How he holds up is key. If they were just "Hedging their bets" they wouldn't have traded something useful for a guy out of options. He's on the roster and Morel is in AAA until further notice. Keppinger coming off broken leg now has sore shoulder. If neither able to play Sox have at least a AAAA replacement. I dunno, the fact that Hahn described Gillaspie's 3b defense as "solid-average" makes me think he's probably worse than Morel defensively. witesoxfan
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 22, 2013 -> 04:20 PM) And I'd bet we'll see the exact same thing with Gillaspie. Maybe...there seems to be a little bit of Blake DeWitt in Gillaspie's game, but I would actually guess they are going to focus on him primarily playing 3B. I do think that the main competition for backup infielder will be Morel vs Sanchez. Sanchez is your low ceiling, high floor guy for that role. The Sox won't care if they have to give him back, but they are going to have to see that Morel has become very well accomodated to playing 2B and SS as well as hitting well, and I just don't know if he can handle all 3. If he can, more power to him, but I have my doubts. So, ultimately, I think we are agreeing that Morel will be in AAA this year.

Yeah but I think the fact that the GM who just acquired Gillaspie used such meh language to describe his defense is maybe a little alarming. Despite Morel's results, I'd wager Hahn would describe his defense as "plus"
witesoxfan
Honestly, Hahn has been a pretty straight shooter. I have to imagine that they honestly believe that Gillaspie is solid defensively.

elrockinMT
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 22, 2013 -> 08:36 PM) I'd assume this puts Morel right where he belongs, in AAA until someone gets hurt or he hits his way back to the big leagues. I tend to agree with you on this. I think Morel still needs to prove himself physically able to make it through the season and that his bat is going to make contact with the ball

I don't know how much stock to put in Hahn's evaluation of a player's defensive ability. Hahn thought Rob Mackowiak could play well in centerfield. Springfield Soxfan
I hope it works out. I just do not like trading pitching for a player who is out of options. Soptic can still be harnessed, look at Nate Jones a few years ago.
Vance Law
Smart move. Gillaspie reminds me of Ross Gload- maybe a little worse with the bat, but can play 3rd base. He'll play against righties and give Keppinger, Konk, and Beckham (Kepp at 2nd) days off here and there. I'll take this rather than Jack Hannahan multi year deal any day.
