MLB Finally Adding Worldwide Draft??

Recommended Posts

Yes, it was that hard. It's also nice when the person with the original post provides a link so I don't have to go about digging for one myself so that I can speak within the same context of what he or she is posting so as to have relevant information. It's a common courtesy to accelerate conversation. For all I knew, he may have been referencing the idea of a Worldwide Draft that came up during the last CBA.

I'm curious to know about age restrictions with regards to international free agents into the future. You can sign a professional contract at the age of 16, but will they allow you to be drafted? Will they hold the worldwide draft separately from the first year player draft, or will it work similar to the NBA? How does previous professional experience figure into bylaws (ala Cuban immigrants as well as Asian players and the current posting system)? There are a lot of questions that need to be a

Did this actually happen? I have a job so if someone posts someone I expect there to be a link. I went to two sites and found nothing so I assume this is more discussion or there have been some movements that MLB is getting closer to getting all parties to agree to such? Clearly Selig has wanted to do this for a while.

MLB suggesting they want it to get done badly and that they are willing to give up major concessions including an increased minimum salary and decreased time before reaching arbitration.

Jiminy Christmas!

I didn't post a link because I got the info off a headline post on MLBTR, and posting a link to MLBTR seemed kind of potinless. Maybe it's just me, but starting a thread about a worldwide draft and posting a link to MLBTR is kind of like starting a thread about spaghetti and posting a link to Chef Boyardee products, I mean it's not really spaghetti, and MLBTR isn't really news either. I was hoping someone else had more real info & actually was surprised to see there wasn't a thread on this already. I checked 3 forums, no thread, my mind was blown.

Anyway, great news for the Sox. I'm not sure why the MLBPA would care enough to fight this at all since they would probably rather see more resources committed to proven players and US-based prospects than buscones and Japanese teams. It's amazing this has taken so long but it'll be terrific for the Sox once it goes through.

Players Association would have to approve it.

And that is how it gets done.

Great article, Flavum. Thanks. I'm surprised there wasn't more conversation here on Lohse. Never saw any evidence that Sox were interested, so I guess they were not. And speaking of lost number 1 picks, I still wish we had not given up a #1 for Dunn. That unknown player would have had 2 seasons of pro ball by now.....

We're literally overloaded on middle of the rotation to bottom of the rotation pitchers, and we spent FA money on a better starter.

I assume you mean Peavy, or are you referring to the recent Sale extension? No argument.

Back to Lohse, I wonder how much good agent Boros did for Lohse. He was certainly looking for more money than the Brewers gave him. I can't remember what the Cards offered Lohse/Boros.

I believe the only offer the Cards made him was the qualifying offer they had to make in order to get the comp pick. I think that was somewhere around $13 million.

In retrospect it might have been smarter to take that money and try again next year.

Is there a multi-year penalty for offering a guy a QO 2 years in a row? (Like there is with the franchise tag in football?)

The odds of him going 16-3 with a 2.86 ERA again are pretty slim. Who knows if a better offer would be out there next year?

A world draft is a horrible idea and just another way MLB is screwing up internationally. The new CBA is awful.

It is a great idea to balance the flow of international talent to the teams that can't spend with the Yankees of the world.
