I love my job . . .

I spent 5 days on a small research vessel last week in the Gulf of Mexico instructing an undergraduate student research cruise. We taught the students a number of oceanographic sampling techniques including benthic dredging, trawling, plankton net tows, CTD, and benthic sediment drop-grab sampling. We caught a few fish and crab species I have never seen before which was pretty cool.

I work for the local newspaper. There's this really hot chick there, and I'm pretty sure she likes me, but I can't build up the nerve to go and talk to her. Otherwise, the job is rather ho hum, not a lot to deal with.

Anyways, on my lunch break, I go into a telephone booth, thrown on tights and a cape, and save the world from dangerous villains.

I administer FMLA (12 weeks of unpaid, job protected leave) for an assortment of clients. This means answering calls, processing voicemails, emails and leaves made on the internet. It's always a good day when an employee calls me and leaves satisfied instead of angry at me because the doctor's office didn't fill out paperwork. Basically if the doctor doesn't complete the paperwork and doesn't get it back to us within 15 days, the employee is screwed. Unfortunately, they don't take ownership for this.

This is the best job I have had since college, even over the internship with the St. Louis Rams. Probably because I'm not selling anything. I also get to volunteer on a local political campaign on the weekends and my candidate is about to win one of three spots on our local village council. It's pretty cool, even if I am a moderate Democrat working for a moderate Republican. (How is that for bipartisanship?)

Anyway, got a compliment from my boss for processing over 80 emails for part of Friday and all of Sunday. And the best part is that I'm off today getting ready to move to my new apartment in Buena Park.

Glad to hear you are relatively happy, Ross.

I worked on an investigation into a state drug lab (the kind of lab where the state police send confiscated drug samples to be tested to build a case for conviction) that has f***ed up majorly. While inventorying the lab, I opened a cabinet to find multiple 30-gallon garbage bags full of weed and mushrooms. It was like the beginning of Half Baked.

Work is fine, I like it, but I don't love it. It supports me, my family, my home, and allows me to do the things I actually love doing.

My real life outside of work is where I find my love and passion.

I think you wackadoos have it bass ackwards.

I would have to say I love most parts of my job. I am running a print shop and have total control as if I was the owner, but I don't have to see the dwindling checking account balance every day! 6 minute drive from home, 10 minutes during school year (go thru 4 school zones). I have a company car and gas card, and can pretty much take off whenever I want as long as I have my time covered. Boss lets me donate printing the the animal shelter I volunteer for and generally doesn't come to the store very much. If I only didn't have to deal with people it would be prefect!

Every day at work is awesome. I work for REI which is a dream job for me.

I love my job because it allows me about three months of time to use all my REI products. It reminds me of a conversation I once had with the pro at the country club where I was a member. He kept urging me to take the PAT (playing ability test) to become a club pro. All I could think was so I can be here on a Saturday morning working the counter instead of playing? Sure.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well I DON'T love my job. In fact I really dislike it. Obviously the thing I could do is quit and find another job, and I've been trying. I've had a BA in Public Administration for 4 years now, with not much to show for it. I'd love to get involved in local government and eventually become a city administrator.

My current job is working at a lumber company. Basically I'm a delivery driver that does a few other things. I've started to call myself a Construction Supplies Specialist just for fun. But my workplace is kind of rediculous when it comes to the coworkers. It's unreal how much polarization there is between the salesmen/saleswoman and the delivery drivers/yard workers. We had performance evaluations a couple weeks ago and I got into trouble from the head manager about using the word polarization along with criticizing overall performance by the store in general. I guess I thought I could be critacally honest in our annual evaluation. Regardless what's really been the tipping point for me is something as stupid as the sales people and head manager buying lunch at least on a weekly basis using the company card and not getting the delivery drivers/yard workers any lunch. It may sound like I'm whining and I probably am, I'm just fed up with the people I deal with. Obviously there's a lot more than just the lunch deal, such as having to drive 10 minutes across town this past week to tell a contractor to turn his phone on so a salesman could talk to him....no joke....nothing was being delivered to this contractor.

My work requires that I travel occasionally, which means that I get to see many different parts of the country as well as build up points/miles for personal use. Last week I had to fly into Baltimore for a day, so I took the opportunity to head to the Sox-Nats game and meet up with lostfan.

I only got to meet Lostfan once in real life, but he's a solid dude, really nice.
