Thesis -- No Thesis

I am approaching that moment in grad school where I have a choice to go thesis or no thesis route in my studies. I have been talking with the professor who would chair my committee, I have been in several of his classes and he believes I will have no problem with the actual writing of the thesis, but the research may be a struggle while also working days as a teacher. Much of the material I will need is housed at the UT library in Austin about 6 hours away from me. I may also need some papers that are in Lawrence Kansas.

My PhD plans are still up in the air, who wants to hire a recently graduated 60+ year old PhD? But intellectually the challenge would be exactly what I need as I end my working career.

Your college don't provide access to an online database of journals?

Yes, however I need to do original research and to do that I need access to the original letters and that is where some of them are stored. No one has bothered to scan and make available.
