Peavy Out

Of all of the people that were pushed hard, Peavy was not one of them. Him and Sale both got lots of extra days off and skipped starts.

They still pitched alot more innings than in the two previous years, as did Quintana.

Ugh Blah Puke Vomit post. I hate when hindsight is used like this.

Yep, cause hindsight of past decisions by coaches and managers is NEVER used when analyzing any sports ever.

True, but both Sale and Quintana haven't look great so far this season. Q seems to get gassed around the fifth and Sale didn't look good to start the game yesterday, but manned up for sure to get 7 strong in there, but the velocity is inconsistent which could be a sign of too many innings. We won't really know until later in the season.

Quintana has a better ERA and WHIP vs last year, along with better K/9, H/9, and BB/9.

Sale had one really bad start, otherwise his numbers would be almost exactly what they were last year.

For some reason, a back spasm popping up in May seems unlikely to be caused by pitching too many innings during a season that ended 7 months prior.

Funny thing is that I wasn't even referring to Peavy's injury when I made the comment about guys being pushed so hard last season and the resulting impact you sometimes see the following year.

Not to say that it is the reason but it could be. Ideally, you use your legs and back extensively when pitching. If issues occur elsewhere (arm, shoulder, legs) you can compensate for it and it could show up in the back. Just as with any of the other areas, you would like the stress to be in the bigger muscles of the back and legs.

This is most likely not the case however it is worth watching if a pattern develops.

I always watch someone who significantly increased their pitching load over the previous year. Not the "Verducci Effect" of young pitchers only but everyone. It doesn't always happen but it's a cause to watch.

Well pushing a young bullpen and young starters and almost never using the bench hurts and that's kind of on Robin.

Cmon. I don't think the manager can be blamed for injuries.

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ May 2, 2013 -> 08:13 PM)
Ozzie used his bench all the time and people hated it. He also let his starters stay in the learn, take their lumps, and he let his relievers face both sides of the plate and work 2-3 inning stints whether they had the ability to do it or not. People hated that too.

Bottom line: bad team = put it on the manager, coaching staff, etc.

Personally I think Robin has done just fine. No chicken stew when all you got is chicken poo.

How true. People hated those things you mentioned about Ozzie, definitely, the Sunday lineup, etc.

Sale yes, but it seemed they pushed Peavy pretty hard last year. He was 5th in innings pitched. With that said, hopefully this is just a minor issue (I assume it is), and he'll be able to start again soon. Gavin's injury on the other hand.....

Peavy pushed himself hard. He wanted to kill when it appeared he might be taken out of a game. That said, who knows? We do know that unless this is a fluke, back spasms are not good. For him to miss a start, wow, they must be really painful.

But who has an injury you can even remotely pin on playing too much last year? Floyd actually pitched fewer innings than any year he was in the White Sox rotation. Beckham broke a bone. Viciedo pulled an oblique. Sanchez and Keppinger weren't even White Sox. Danks injury certainly wasn't a result of Robin running him into the ground. Septimo hardly pitched for the White Sox.

Facts. Nice job of supplying facts over myth. Who was fathom talking about then?

They rushed Floyd back from his elbow injury big time last year. IIRC, they didn't even give him a rehab start prior to rushing him back to face the Tigers in a big game. If they weren't in contention, they probably would have shut him down for the year.

If that's true, do you really think the final decision on that was Ventura's? Face it, this team thought his current injury was fairly minor 2 days agao.

I never blamed it solely on Ventura.

Given the Sox record of stellar health and having the fewest players hit the DL, I'm reluctant to second guess them.

If it keeps up, a lot of people will get their wish for a selloff and sixty win baseball.

Yeah, but we don't want the injuries to be to the possible trade chips the Sox have. A Peavy long-term injury would be devastating for this organization.

Exactly. Then no good comes from sucking.

Who would have ever thought Floyd, Danks and Peavy would all be out in the same season? What is happening to baseball pitchers?? Are 10-year careers in the future going to be nonexistent? Are baseball pitchers careers going to be 4-5 year windows of excellence, then surgery, then mop up duty til nobody offers you a contract (unless you are a lefty?)

Peavy has been pulled from 1 start with back spasms.
