Tyler Flowers

I was a Flowers supporter to start the season, but I must say I've seen enough. The Sox management really needs to shake things up and I think that it should start here. Maybe a few weeks in the minors would wake Flowers up, IDK, but something needs to happen to get this teams attention. As a primary defensive position, the catcher should set the tone defensively for a team and this is not happening.

This should not be the only move either, Flowers should not be made the scapegoat for the lousy way this team is playing, but it's a start.

JMHO

Whoever this teams baserunning coach is (is it Boston?) should be fired immediately as well!

Doug Sisson is coordinator for baserunning, but he deals mostly with the minor leaguers.

BTW, Jeff Cox was hired by the Tigers this season, didn't realize he was back in baseball. Ozzie can sleep easier, haha.

Maybe they need to "promote" him to the majors for while!

What's Jose Valentin, Hawks best baserunner ever, doing these days? Let's bring him in to work with these guys.

.308 average, .923 OPS in June.

I just wish he would be a bit more accountable.

Just say, "I didn't make the play, and I should have..." instead of, "well, the ball skipped and I never had 100% control of it and..."

Those are the plays major league catchers are paid to make.

Personally, I think this is another thing that should have been practiced a lot more in spring training, but the whole team sat that out this year. Both catchers are missing tons of balls they should get.

Soxtalk needs three threads on Tyler Flowers. God the posting here is as bad as the defense and base running on the field.

Frustration and the American need to blame someone. I suppose if we were undefeated the post would be more like "you know it's coming. This team isn't that good." LOL

Total Balta post.

I'm f***ing sick to death of people here demanding we trade everyone for prospects and then simultaneously giving those prospects exactly 1.5 weeks to be successful before they are declared to be sucky, bad, awful, and needing of replacement.

THIS IS WHAT IS SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN WHEN YOU BRING YOUNG PLAYERS ALONG.

I'm not defending Flowers play and I'll be the first to admit I was wrong about him thus far. With that said, am I right in thinking some of the backlash is in who he's replacing?

That's certainly part of it. It's evident by a few repeat offenders who love to bump this thread.

The Opposing Pitcher's Guide to Tyler Flowers:

Page One---

First pitch--throw whatever the hell you want right down the middle....he will watch it go by every time

Second pitch-- throw whatever the hell you want in the dirt....he swing at it every time

This.

Tyler earned his shot at a big league starting job in 2013. The Sox made the decision to go with him, and so now you play him. The Sox don't need to do anything other than sit back, relax, strap it down. Tyler is going to play himself into the future or out the league this year on his own. If it's August and the waiver period is nearing it's end, and you're about to expand your rosters to up to 40, then if Flowers has answered your question and shown he's done you turn the page. And Josh Phegley IMO isn't turning page, that's starting a new paragraph on the same page as before. Get in a solution, probably a vet, because catching is hard & I'd much rather let other teams develop my catcher for me, and sign him to a FA deal knowing what he is, who he is, and that he can handle our staff.

And get used to the Tyler Flowers of the world. This is what rebuilding is all about.

In 26 ABs. You get worked up about people wanting Phegley and then roll out some sampling bias.

Great! You're 100% right!

He was due to get some hits falling at some point. Now lets see if he can get on a little bit of a run here and if not, then late in the season, when the next guy should get a look, we'll give him a look.

That's what you're supposed to do with young guys. They're supposed to struggle, sometimes for years, before finally finding a groove with the bats.

This is the guide to throwing to about 100% of major league hitters until they realize that you are trying to get ahead of them early with a cookie. Then they hit it.

That's a definite yes but Pierzynski doesn't represent a "who" so much as a "what" and that is someone more productive than Flowers.

I think there definitely some "who" mixed in. Pierzynski was a rock behind the plate, but acting as if he was a stud catcher every year for 8 years is absolutely incorrect. He had several mediocre to bad years mixed in there as well.

Oh for sure you got a tireless guy who was never injured and had a fiery attitude which is not what Texas is getting from him this year so bringing up AJP isn't much of an argument anyway.

Balta could have helped his cause by going further back than the beginning of June. If you had checked the last 30 days stats at whitesox.com you'd see he hasn't been bad at all hitting. It's his D that has everyone so PO'd especially after last night. He's just been so bad behind the dish. Everyone is angry about the whole team's D and lousy base running and the criticism of Flowers is a reflection of that more than anything.
