Do we have a guy with a funky delivery like Ehren Wasserman/Chad Bradford/Takatsu we could try?

Probably not.

Someone that throws slow enough to throw off hitters who are used to all gas coming from the bullpen...Remenowsky?

We still have that righty, forget his name. We had Drew O'Neill as I believe a 2nd rounder from a low 3/4 who was compared to Linebrink stuff-wise, but his arm burst into flames (I think he's retired now) and then the following year we drafted another one who was supposed to be better, and who was supposed to move quickly. That guy got hurt but I think he's back in the system again. I think it was NSS who was all about that guy. Maybe we'll go to that one. I still can't remember his name, but he's a righty specialist prospect.

90% sure it's Dan Remenowsky you're referring to.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 23, 2013 -> 01:07 PM)
Is he supposed to use the same 2 or 3 guys every game? You can't manage every game like it's game 7 of the WS. Crain appeared the last 2 games. Do you want him to get hurt and miss the next 120? The Sox came up with 2 runs. They were destined to lose no matter what BO or NJ did. The Sox bullpen has been getting a workout lately. Sometimes you have to hope the last guys in there can get the job done. You can't wear everyone out by the beginning of June.

Very true. I used to stand up for Ozzie as well when he'd throw a reliever out there who sucked versus a reliable one. Some days you have to pitch the sucky relievers like Dick Allen said above.

If you score three runs or less every game your bullpen is going to get worn down and you are going to lose a lot of games in the American League.

Best post of the thread.

You guys don't agree with me that Nate has a funky delivery? Gawd I hate his release.

It's not conventional, and it's certainly far from textbook, but it works for him.

If they could figure out a way to change his modify his delivery, take a bit of juice off the fastball (increasing movement) and give him 50% better control, surely they would have done it already.

Just not that easy.

He was an effective reliever for most of last season. They're just going to have to be patient to see if he'll come back around and figure things out in side sessions with Cooper, Parent, etc.

Sending Jones down isn't going to help the team. They have already dipped into the Knights roster and we saw Heath, which I'm sure no one wants to see pitch in a meaningful game anytime soon, and Omogrosso, the guy whose presence on the mound was the reason for this thread. If they are the ones getting called up, the other guys are more than likely, worse. Nate struggled a little last year and turned it on. He still has the same ability, but his command is off, which has always been his issue. If he gets it together, which he showed he can last year, he's really good. Everyone fights through slumps. If Nate was nails everytime, his bank account would be a lot larger than it is right now.

For some guys who want to see the Sox totally rebuild, it's amazing the lack of patience these posters have.

Jones doesn't need more movement on any of his pitches. That's actually part of the problem.

We have already called up the three best relievers at Charlotte. What is down there is worse than Omo, Veal, and Heath. Let that sink in for a minute folks.

Kyle Bellamy, I remember now.

What's he been up to?

Wassermann was an AAP for me. Remenowsky is not a righty specialist at all.

And Bellamy has been "up to" his second arm-related surgery in his minor league career, he's out all this season.

Troncoso is about the only guy in AAA right now, as a reliever, who looks like he could potentially help. But he's probably no better than Omo or Heath right now.

Marinez was supposed to be ready and good, but he's been pretty disappointing this year so far in Charlotte. Remenowsky may have been ready, but he had a knee injury and only just got back pitching like a week ago. Heath is what he is. That's pretty much it for bullpen arms in Charlotte worth even mentioning. The system has a few more interesting relief prospects in the low minors, but none to speak of at AAA right now.

I know Rienzo has been struggling this year, but he's shown some improvement in his last couple of starts. IMO, he's got reliever written all over him and I honestly think he'll be called up at some point this season to fill a bullpen role.

Given that several of our starters are struggling to go deep into games, I think you could make an argument that Rienzo makes more sense than Omogrosso right now.

Looking back on it, Ehren Wassermann's time here may have been one of the first obvious on-field manifestations of the behind the scenes conflict between Ozzie & Kenny Williams. It seemed to me then, and even more now in hindsight, that Ozzie was using Ehren as a means of telling Kenny "I want guys who can throw to both sides of the plate & for multiple innings" rather than accept the guy for what he was. And that hurt me deeply as a fan, because Wassermann was one of my favorite stories in the organization at the time and I really wanted him to succeed. In that s***ty 2007 pen he was the one guy with the least amount of stuff but unlike the rest of them, in his case, something actually did exist between the ears & he helped out that pen a lot because of it. Then after that Ozzie just seemed to be like "f*** this guy" which I didn't understand. Specialists are still very much undervalued in the game because though they may only be able to pitch to one side of the plate for a couple batters, they do often come into some of the toughest situations you will see during the course of the game. Veal last year owned Prince Fielder with the game on the line, and it's nice when you have someone you can trust to come into those situations. Remember Kelly Wunsch? If you ever see that man, buy him a drink because he was the man.

In 2003, Kelly Wunsch pitched in 43 games and recorded 0 wins, 0 losses, and 0 saves. I remember reading something Stark or Kurkjian did at the time and that is like one of the only seasons in recorded history like that with so many games pitched.

That happened to a lesser extent with Chad Bradford...then puzzingly, he ended up pitching a key inning in the playoffs against SEA when nobody was expecting him to be utilized in that way.

Then the trade to OAK which was dissected over and over again in Moneyball and other places...

Chad Bradford career fWAR - 7.5

Miguel Olivo career fWAR - 8.8

I'm thinking Williams might get criticized a little too harshly about that deal? Nevermind that Olivo was part of a trade that brought in Garcia who helped win a World Series.
