I think Flowers defense was a bit overrrated because of who he caught. He was Peavy's personal catcher. He's not going to get a ton of 57 footers to block. Peavy has a great move, so he's going to get a chance with every baserunner. If he were Santiago's personal catcher last year instead of Peavy's, the huge upgrade over AJ defensively that was talked about, would probably have never been talked about.

Offensively, Flowers looks like he's going to be very streaky. I really doubts he develops into something too much better than he is now. Last night, he swings at balls in the dirt and takes pitches right down central for strikes.

Gimenez did have a huge game last week, but he's probably not long for major league baseball.

Will he get called up or are they going to let him develop?

He'll get called up, struggle for 2 weeks, and then we'll have threads saying he's terrible and should be jettisoned and we need to go into full rebuilding mode.

Tyler looks like he is crapping his pants every time he comes to the plate now. Deer in the headlights. Has to be thinking that if he doesn't start hitting soon he goes back down to minors and is pressing ever harder, and that just doesn't work. Swings at balls in the dirt and watches ones down the middle of the plate. And seems to be carrying those struggles over to his defense now as well. I wish I knew a solution, as I think he has SOME hitting ability in him, certainly better than he is currently showing.

This is the wrong comparison.

With that said, who knows? Hopefully Tyler comes out of the off day rested and figures something out.

Elaborate. You can't just state something so vague. That comes across as super dismissive.

It isn't Flowers vs Gimenez, it is Flowers vs Phegley

That's some pretty spot-on analysis right there. I'd never thought about that.

I think rest is a huge part of the reason his defense has disappointed us. He makes these mistakes because he's winded. A backup is never winded.

He talked about this on the radio in the preseason, that he was going to have a hard time with conditioning since it had been a while since he caught full time.

That's what AJ gave you that I always felt was underappreciated around here. He kept the back up in the dugout. If Flowers is winded right now, that's on him, and it's not because he was a back up. If he wants to use that as an excuse, it's proof he shouldn't be anything more than a back up. You would think if you were going to get your big chance, you would be in the best shape of your life, ready for anything.

If he is "winded" now, it is only going to get worse. If that's an excuse, he obviously can't hack it.

Yep, that's a pretty awful excuse by Flowers. Also if it's true, then shame on Ventura for not playing Gimenez more.

I do not think Phegley will be up until after the ASB if he even comes up this year. He is already like 25 years old I think though. He has been through a lot and he has always had a nice bat. Hahn probably wants to give Flowers most of the season though after taking the chance on him.

Atleast Gimenez makes decent contact and can get a runner in.

One takeaway is a Hahn quote stating that switching to Phegley could have unintended consequences for the pitching staff. I could see some risk involved, especially if Phegley is considered a poor game caller. Having a full spring training to work with pitchers would obviously be more ideal, but at some point you have to roll the dice IF Flowers continues to struggle and IF you're still in the playoff hunt later in the season. For now, I think you keep rolling with Flowers and hope he can show some improvement soon.
