greg775
Geographically fabricated sports rivalries are for people who know little about sports and need a reason to watch, and Major League Baseball was smart enough to begin taking full advantage of that in 1997. That's exactly what the Sox-Cubs series is--a mess of forced enthusiasm on often-mediocre baseball teams and beaten-to-death insults about Sox fans being poor and Cubs fans being drunk coming from Cubs fans who are likely poor and Sox fans who are likely drunk. That is a bunch of crap. Before interleague play, the Sox-Cubs played some exhibition game for charity during the season and it was packed and the whole city was going crazy for bragging rights. The Sox and Cubs even used their starters for five innings or so. Some families to this day have big-time arguments during holiday parties as my family did on the South Side when I was a kid. My dad, uncle and grandfathers who had different allegiances would scream at each other discussing the two teams and their ballparks. I think the Sox should be ashamed they loafed during the 3-game Cub series and lost all three. The lazy Sox millionaires should be embarrassed. Nice job, players and coaches alike to get their asses kicked by the Cubs 3 days. Edited May 31, 2013 by greg775

I wouldn't care if they didn't win a single game against the Cubs for the next 5 years if it meant they had a winning record against the AL central in that same time-frame
greg775
QUOTE (Iwritecode @ May 31, 2013 -> 07:57 PM) They are still much less meaningful compared to games against the Tigers, Royals, Indians or Twins. I wouldn't care if they didn't win a single game against the Cubs for the next 5 years if it meant they had a winning record against the AL central in that same time-frame It depends what you mean by "meaningful." In the standings, sure because thanks to baseball's horrible rules we have to play the division teams 18 times. There are a lot of fights between Cub and Sox fans, verbal and physical. I'm not going to say the series doesn't matter just because my team played like bums for 3 days. It matters a lot to me and a lot of people who loose teeth over Sox vs. Cubs and have for years. Based on the attendance numbers, you're becoming the minority. Most people seem to be looking at these games as just other game against a non-divisional rival. City-bragging rights are worth about as much as the attendance trophy.

southsider2k5
QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jun 4, 2013 -> 11:51 AM) I think it matters just because I have Cubs fan friends. Hopefully a ran out or two wouldn't give Samardzija the start. Even with our long losing streak, we STILL have a better record than they do. greg775
Pretty funny that you can only conclude it'll be a fourth loss to the Cubs if Samarj pitches. Hilarious how bad a team the White Sox have become. It's going to be hard to get used to having a bad team. Our team's problems aren't easily fixable.

Win the damn division. As a matter of fact, the whole interleague thing is dumb without the same rules in both leagues.

Say what you want. The Cub series will go down as the turning point in the Sox season. It's when the Sox completely went in the tank. It'll be 8 in a row tonight. That's a long losing streak. Like I said before you hit 10 and heads should start to roll. It's hard to lose 10 baseball games in a row.
