(Do teams get a compensatory pick in these rounds if a guy doesn't sign? Thanks, don't remember how the rule changed).

I believe top 5 rounds are still protected, but don't quote me on that.

Interesting. He's a Junior so if he returns to school and things don't go well he could potentially screw himself.

Or he could potentially make himself a lot more money too. Appel sure did.

I really, really like the sound of this kid. Big boy, good velocity, fresh pitching arm...this is a great pick. Let's hope he signs (which is something the Sox have proven capable of doing).

Depending on how strongly he's committed to Texas Tech, this is where those "overdrafts" (which really means underslot) comes in handy. You can use the money you save there and make Lowry a little bigger offer if necessary to come off the commit. It's a high risk pick, but if it pans out, he could be a great pitcher.

Which is exactly why the idea of value in a pick based simply on his draft position versus where he was actually picked is so absurd. Things have changed. Overdrafting one guy, can lead to the ability to sign another guy that you might not have been able to sign under the current rules. It worked for the Sox last year in picking up someone like Ayala who probably would have gone to school instead of signing for slot. Things are more complex than they were even a couple of years ago. It isn't as simple as "value" anymore.

Overeaching on early picks has to stop with the scouting department.

This is an impressive contrast in posts.

Sox 6th Round Pick:

James Dykstra....RHP

6-4 above average fastball.

6'4'', big fastball...where have I heard that before?

Why not just take the guy you want with the pick? Risk losing he 200th player for the 49th.

That has him listed as an OF and they called him a RHP above?

I noticed the same thing. He had to be a pretty big reach at this point. Am assuming this is one of those the Sox see something others haven't yet. He was a pretty highly touted high school prospect (committed to LSU) and has a power arm. Limited experience as a full time pitcher (was known for his power bat more then his right arm prior to transferring to San Marcos).

If you didn't understand it when you read it, there really isn't much of a point of trying to explain it again. Either you are being intentionally obtuse, or you don't understand the modern draft process.
