ManbearPuig has been tearing it up. Hoping to see him play when they come down to San Diego.

Ian Kennedy was super serial when he hit ManBearPuig.

Homer #6. Opposite field, right center...well, closer to straightaway, about 390 or 395.

Struggling at just a .483 average.

"He is not to be believed, because this game is just not that easy. Now he and Joe DiMaggio were tied, 27 hits in their first 15 games, however, in his 16th game, DiMaggio had three hits."

Dodgers rookie sensation Yasiel Puig has made quite an impression in less than two weeks since getting called up to the big leagues. On the field, the outfielder has more or less done it all. He hit four home runs in his first five major-league games — including a two-homer performance in his second career game and a grand slam in his fourth game. He’s also showcased a laser right arm when his jaw-dropping throw from right field to third base gunned down a baserunner during a game against the Braves last week. Puig is earning plenty of attention, even breaking Dodgers merchandise records along the way, as his legend continues to grow. And apparently, a few Los Angeles-area musicians are taking notice, too. Puig is the inspiration for the newest grindcore rock band, aptly named “Puig Destroyer,” following his dominant debut in a Dodgers uniform. It originally began as a joke, Ian Miller, one of the band’s members, wrote, but has spawned into something greater. The group consists of Miller, Jon Howell and Mike Minnick as drum programmers as well as lead vocalist Riley Breckenridge, who described the new band as a “baseball-themed grindcore project.” What’s more, the band has already begun recording. It plans on releasing a five-track EP soon, which will include its first song, “One Man, Five Tools,” which was released for download on Thursday. No word on if Puig plans to use the 48-second track as a new walk-up song, but you can give it a listen below, courtesy of Puig Destroyer’s Band Camp page.

Yep, Puig stands way off the plate.

Two sliders, down and away. Had him off balance once he got ahead in the count. He threw all sliders to Uribe.

I went to the game. Marquis made him look foolish at the plate after he hit the home run. Struck him out twice and then got him to break his bat and ground out weakly.

Mattingly's also supporting Bochy's idea that it would be almost impossible to pick Puig over players who've produced for 2 1/2 months.

That said, if MLB.com puts him into the vote, then all bets are off.

As great as the story of Puig is , there's no way he deserves an All Star game appearance. That kind of thing would be totally unfair to all baseball players who toil for years to get picked where they put together that one magical half season who might not ever get picked again. Puig will get plenty of All Star appearances if he proves it over more than a handful of games.

Puig 1/1 with another run scored. Still at a stout .460. 29/63.

Hopefully he'll not "fall apart" the rest of the game like he did last night after the early homer.

At-Bat says he loves to face curveball, hates the cutter/slider. Would agree, after watching Marquis toy with him last night.

Looks like they are giving him a steady diet of offspeed stuff low and away....when they finally came in, he drilled it but right at the CFer for his 2nd AB.

Dodgers go overboard for Yasiel Puig

June, 28, 2012

By Keith Law | ESPN.com

The most surprising news in the baseball world today is that the Los Angeles Dodgers have signed Cuban outfielder Yasiel Puig to a seven-year deal worth $42 million.

....

Based on what I've heard about Puig, this is a bizarre overreaction to the upcoming international spending cap, and a huge bet that, despite a stiff swing and less athletic body than Soler, Puig's bat is good enough to justify an investment of this size. I've also heard that Puig was badly out of shape in his recent workouts in Mexico, and that his throwing arm is not as strong since it was last seen in games. And unlike Soler or Cespedes, Puig barely has played in games outside of Cuba, so major league scouts have not had much of an opportunity to evaluate him properly.

Home run #7 for Puig.

Wonder how many he gets before the All-Star Break?

If nothing else, he'll PROBABLY be in the Home Run Derby.

Still hitting .434....scratch that, 442.

3/4, most likely what will prove to be the GW-RBI. Driven in both runs to single handedly put the Dodgers ahead of the All-Star Game manager and Gigantes.

All three hits were off sliders.

After the Padres' series, the prevailing theory was to go down and away with sliders...in the dirt or off the plate, Marquis and Huston Street were particularly effective with that approach.

A weakness? Only 3 walks in 76 AB's, it's seemingly Vladimir Guerrero all over again in terms of approach.

The homer was another opposite field job off Bumgarner, who had been awesome recently against the Dodgers.

Giants' announcing team was in shock they (the reliever, Campos) even threw a strike to Puig and didn't walk him intentionally if he didn't first fish for something out of the strike zone.

Puig also had a very nice diving catch against Buster Posey.

Someone posted this at WSI, I found it interesting:

Puig, June 3-20, 2013:

16 G, 62 AB, 6 HR, 12 RBI, 1 BB, 14 K, .452/.477/.790, 1.267 OPS

Viciedo, May 14-30, 2012:

16 G, 63 AB, 8 HR, 23 RBI, 1 BB, 4 K, .444/.453/.857, 1.310 OPS

Awesome.

Awesome.

Except Viciedo had cups of coffee in 2010, 2011 and more than a month of 2012.

I love Dayan as much as the next poster here, but you can't even compare them except for 2 aspects....power, especially to the opposite field, and their respective arm strengths, although Puig definitely gets the nod there too.

Puig just became the best LFer in baseball, kind of like the tallest midget.

Kemp's back.

Puig's also not the first guy to come up and hit like a bat out of hell. Give it some time before declaring him "the best left fielder in baseball." I mean seriously, lay off the hyperbole a little bit.

3/4, mostly off Lincecum, .435

Dodgers are getting hot now with Kemp back.

The only reason I said "best left fielder in baseball" was not about his overall ability, but simply the fact that fielding-wise, and arm strength, I can't think of anyone who has a better set of tools. (And it was the first game he played in LF, after starting all those games in RF with Crawford and Kemp out).

That's it.

And 5 of his 7 homers have been to the opposite field. That's very impressive.

So he is the best LF in baseball, even though he has only played one game in LF, and the rest of his games were in RF.

DEFENSIVELY, yes. Although it's very close with Trout playing there now for the Angels.

If Bourjos is playing in LF (he should be in CF), then I would be happy to give it to him, although he lacks Puig's arm strength, he's a superior defender overall.
