Hummel probably the PTBNL

Hummel was drafted as a shortstop out of Old Dominion.

He can't play that position in the big leagues. Not enough lateral quickness and range.

To me he projects as a utility guy -- similar to Graffanino, perhaps with a bit more pop.

Sullivan has value. The trade makes sense for this season. We might view it differently in a couple of seasons -- but Sullivan will help over the last five weeks, a perfect fit for the pen. Be nice if the Sox can keep him next year.

As for Hankins going to Arizona Fall League, he's 27 and a six-year minor leaguer.

that's not the profile of an AFL player.

My guess is the Sox will send Jeremy Reed, Kris Honel, Pacheco, maybe Jason Stumm and perhaps Ruddy Yan. Ryan Wing could also be in the mix.

my bad

see that Hankins is indeed listed on the Fall League roster

that's pretty surprising because he doesn't fit the profile of an AFL player.

See Cotts is also listed. Can't imagine he'll be there now that he's in the rotation for the big club. Maybe Honel will take his place.

They plan to teach Cotts a cutter there. My guess is his innings will be limited.

Hankins is a great bat and a clutch hitter. The Sox like him and want to find a position.

They want Cotts to develop a cutter. I doubt he'll throw a lot of innings. I think the big thing with him is they want him to just work on the cutter. I'm not a big fan of having a pitcher keep throwing and throwing, so I sure hope Cotts doesn't go a lot of innings.

i believe they limit guys to 3 innings or less most of the time in the AFL.

if he pitches there a couple of weeks, it might help him.

but I wonder if he will still go if he pitches all of September and (fingers crosse) into October with the White Sox

If that is the case, things could certainly change.

I'd probably add someone like Bullard to the roster. He has always been able to throw innings, and this year since he moved to the pen he didn't throw near as many innings.

Just a thought.

As you all can tell, I'm not a big fan of sending starters to the fall league unless they missed part of the season early on do to injury and you want to even out their workload with this.

It certainly helped Josh Stewart though.

I hope that next year, Josh can pick up where he left off before the injury. I'd hate to see him backslide because of this. He was fairly impressive in Chicago.

Would you think that Josh has chance of beating out Neal for a 5th starter spot?

In my mind, i doubt it. If they feel Cotts is ready to go through a whole season, they will go with him. He has much better long term potential.

There is also the question of Stewart's health. If they can't figure out what is wrong with him, he may be done. That said, he could be pitching again in Instructional League. I am not sure of his current status, but last I heard, everything is still a mystery.
