A competitive White Sox (let alone the Bears or Cubs) team >>>>>>>> a competitive Blackhawks team. And you don't have to give back the trophy if you don't win it the next year. I really don't think so. If anything, I think you are looking at the two being equal, but I think the Hawks have the advantage. Winning a championship in terms of how many pay attention, I'd say you're looking at 1) Bears 2) Bulls 3) Cubs 4) Blackhawks 5) Sox 6) Ping Pong 7) Lacrosse 8) Fire 9) Wolves 10) Sky

Steve9347
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 25, 2013 -> 08:51 AM) Unfortunately, it's the one Chicago team nobody gives a s*** about. The Chicago Blackhawks have a sellout streak that dates back to the final three games of the 2007-2008 season. Yup, no one cares. Talk about something you actually have a clue in - if such a topic exists.

The Hawks won. Great. Hockey will never be baseball, football and basketball, no matter what the, I don't know, 5 actual diehards and 20 bandwagoners say. No one in their right mind would argue hockey's place on the national stage but this city has absolutely fallen in love with the Hawks. Look at the sell out streak, ticket prices, tv ratings, whatever you want to look at, Chicago has been hockey crazy for a bit now.

My_Sox_Summer
AJ provided this team with a leader and a voice. An attitude. They are really missing that this year. This team is very vanilla, someone needs to step up and make some noise. Pauly isn't gonna do it. Dunn isn't gonna do it. Peavy talks a good game, but doesn't carry it over clearly. We need a leader. AJ doesn't make us a contender, much like Flowers doesn't make us a losing team. That being said, a World Series trophy is only second to a Super Bowl trophy in this town. NBA would be 3rd. Hockey 4th. There are a TON of Blackhawk bandwagons right now, that happens. It says alot that the Stanley Cup finals was on a channel that many folks didn't even get on their regular cable/dish. Hawks sell tons of tickets, and keep raising their prices. No one even complains. The wagon is going strong, ride it till the wheels fall off! I enjoy the Hawks, but I am in no way a die-hard fan. And hell, I'd watch the Playoffs of just about any sport.

Look at the sell out streak, ticket prices, tv ratings, whatever you want to look at, Chicago has been hockey crazy for a bit now. On a national stage you are right. But hockey in the northeast, midwest and northwest is very strong. Hockey is clearly behind the NFL, NBA and MLB, but there is enough of a following in large areas of the country to clearly place it among the "big sports". Tough to argue cities like Chicago, New York, Boston, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Detroit don't care about it.
caulfield12
Here's the thing. Go back to 2005. Which team, had they won a trophy in their sport, would have a bigger, more excited parade? If it happened anytime soon, it would be the Cubs, quite obviously. The White Sox parade was far bigger than anything that's ever happened with the Blackhawks in terms of a citywide reaction. Anyone going to games in 2006 would probably disagree with some of those rankings as well. Obviously right now, it's Bears/Blackhawks/Bulls (with a healthy Rose)/Cubs/Illinois/White Sox. The Gophers and Fighting Sioux (or whatever their name will end up being) draw like crazy though.
Harry Chappas
Bears Cubs Bulls White Sox/ Blackhawks Illinois-----Illinois should not even be listed The Blackhawks have the advantage of playing inside when the weather sucks hence their sellout streak. When they were bad (2004-2006, the ABC line) they had literally nobody at the games. They are still behind the Bulls and always will be. It is a Bears town then the cubs. hogan873
Any team that gets hot, like the Blackhawks did, will be followed heavily in this city. Well, aside from the Cubs and Sox as the true fans for each team wouldn't jump on the other bandwagon. But you cannot argue that the number of bandwagon fans outnumber the number of true Hawks fans right now. There are more true Bulls and Bears fan than true Blackhawks fans. Part of that is the fact that hockey is harder to follow than football, basketball, and baseball. The game is extremely fast-paced, and there are a lot of rules people don't understand. Many people who have been following hockey throughout the playoffs were doing so because a Chicago team was playing very well and had a chance to win a championship, not because they were hockey fans. They were both estimated at 2 million though both numbers were stretched and unfair to compare since the Sox had a longer route. The real telling number is tv ratings and the Sox dwarf the Hawks there during their runs. Edited June 25, 2013 by Buehrle>Wood

The Gophers and Fighting Sioux (or whatever their name will end up being) draw like crazy though. Hockey is becoming quite popular in the pacific northwest as well. Attendance shouldn't be the be all end all of a popularity debate. I believe the MLS outdrew on average both the NBA and NHL (and possibly MLB). I'm a huge soccer fan, and the sport is absolutely growing in this country, but it'd be silly to suggest it is more popular than the aforementioned sports.
