Bears

Cubs

Bulls

White Sox/ Blackhawks

Illinois-----Illinois should not even be listed

The Blackhawks have the advantage of playing inside when the weather sucks hence their sellout streak. When they were bad (2004-2006, the ABC line) they had literally nobody at the games. They are still behind the Bulls and always will be.

It is a Bears town then the cubs.

The Illini run 05 was a pretty big deal in the city. They get some mention. I could have sworn the ratings for the championship game were bigger than the Super Bowl in Chicago that year.

Hockey is becoming quite popular in the pacific northwest as well. Attendance shouldn't be the be all end all of a popularity debate.

I believe the MLS outdrew on average both the NBA and NHL (and possibly MLB). I'm a huge soccer fan, and the sport is absolutely growing in this country, but it'd be silly to suggest it is more popular than the aforementioned sports.

MLS plays in larger stadiums than the NBA & NHL.

They were both estimated at 2 million though both numbers were stretched and unfair to compare since the Sox had a longer route.

The real telling number is tv ratings and the Sox dwarf the Hawks there during their runs.

Anyone know what the local TV ratings were for the 2005 WS? I can only find the national ones (which were brutal), I'd be interested to see how much higher they were.

AJ would not save this team. The rebuild has to start some time and it starts at letting his $7.5M contract go to a contender. Flowers was a project when acquired and has lived up to his scouting report. He has done a good job of handling the pitching staff, and showed that his role his a backup catcher with some pop, but not a starter on a playoff caliber team. The team will be even worse next year when PK walks at the end of the year and Rios is traded with no suitable player to replace him. Don't expect the Sox to go out and spend money in the offseason to shore up a team that is pretty far away from contending, probably three offensive players. Look for deals similar to Keppingers to serve as roster filler until the farm system starts contributing.

The White Sox parade was far bigger than anything that's ever happened with the Blackhawks in terms of a citywide reaction.

That's just plain inaccurate. More than 2 million people showed up to the Blackhawks parade.

The number of people that go celebrate after a championship and/or attend a parade is not a true reflection of how many fans a team has, in my opinion. There are people at my work planning on going to the parade who probably were watching an episode or Real Housewives last night instead of the game.

Say what you will about bandwagon, fair-weather fans all you want. Every sport has them. At max, the Blackhawks draw interest from 100% of the sports watching city while the Sox at best get 40%. It's not even close.

There are also way fewer bandwagoners now than there were in 2010. 2010 bred bandwagoners and many of them turned into real Blackhawks fans.

Anyway, this isn't the right sub forum for this.

Yeah, my post wasn't directly tied to what you said, sorry. More just a blanket statement that anyone saying one team had more fans at a parade or celebrating afterwards = bigger fan base is inaccurate.

As someone that doesn't really care about hockey, the one thing that last night confirmed to me is that if the Cubs ever win the World Series, I have to leave this state.

If the Cubs ever win the World Series, the city will burn.

42% of Chicago Households for game 4 2005. 32% for the Hawks in 2010. Nationally the World Series had double the viewership.

Unless NBA and NHL games are legitimately always sold out (not fudging numbers to make them look better), then venue size isn't relevant.

I know some franchises draw very well, but I'd wager half the teams in each league struggle somewhat with attendance.

I've watched game 7 between Marlins/Cubs from 2003 on youtube a few times since it was posted by MLB, and there are two conclusions I've come to:

1- Miguel Cabrera has gained a lot of weight

2- I still get anxious seeing how ridiculous the Wrigley area was during that game/series

I want to see 2013 numbers. This year seemed so much bigger - EVERYONE was talking Hawks. In 2010 people were like "oh that's cool the Hawk won" while this year they were "OMG THAT GAME WAS/THIS GAME IS AWESOME".

Way more were watching this year. Wait for the numbers. For Game 5 (6-5 OT win) 1,004,580 of 1,406,400 Chicagoland homes that had their tvs on tuned into the game at one point or another (71%).

I wasn't there, obviously. But when Kerry Wood hit that 2-run HR to tie the game in like the third inning or whatever, it was the loudest I've ever heard a sports stadium/park EVER. I live in the suburbs and I felt like I could hear the mayhem.

Not sure where you git your numbers, but sportsmedia watch had game 5 at a 22.1 rating locally.

Fake edit: Do you mean game 4? Tvtbythenumbers had that at 22. Sox World Series presumably kill all these numbers, but I guess wait for the clincher info to come out.

I remember seeing the horde of people on Waveland during the game too, it was just pure mayhem on the street after that homer.

Have you seen the Bartman 30 for 30? That was game 6, but the kid filming from the stadium gave a good feeling as to how anxious the place was.

22.1, peak of 28.7 x 35000 = 1,004,500

I remember feeling like the room I was in became 200 degrees after that homer. Only other time a sporting event caused that type of reaction for me was when Jenks blew the first game vs Indians in that big series in 2005 (the day before the Crede walkoff).

Miguel Cabrera was incredible defensively in RF in game 7. I still think Josh Beckett should get his jersey retired at the Cell :)

Okay but those already are household ratings. The 28% peak means 28% were tuned in. So where does 71% come in?

My complete misunderstanding of numbers, apparently.

I'm a marketer, not a scientist!
