southsider2k5
QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 04:34 PM) When there are multiple teams offering proposals, you take the best one. It's just too risky to hang on to Peavy. In my opinion, his value can't get much higher. Do it now. So keeping an established top flight starting pitcher, who you have under control for at least the next year and a half is riskier than trading him for an unknown number and level of prospects? Really? We don't even know what offers look right now to even start to make a statement like that with any level of confidence.
iamshack
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 02:47 PM) And Billy Beane counters Hahn's message to interested buyers. Yeah, but that is a bit telling, too...he's going to dangle what he would have traded for Peavy to try and get a bullpen arm or an MI...if that's accurate at all, what they've been offering is s***. southsider2k5
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 04:58 PM) Same logic was used for Quentin, Danks, and Floyd. Good teams don't trade away their good players. Those would be bad teams.
iamshack
QUOTE (Baron @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 02:49 PM) No your just assuming they are getting good prospects back(Who the hell knows) and think they should trade him immediately for that. Yeah I was way off. Take some meds and have a nap. I think it's pretty clear you should follow your own advice...
flavum
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 05:51 PM) So keeping an established top flight starting pitcher, who you have under control for at least the next year and a half is riskier than trading him for an unknown number and level of prospects? Really? We don't even know what offers look right now to even start to make a statement like that with any level of confidence. Bottom line, the Sox are a bad team. They have a veteran piece that is seemingly in demand right now. Given that Peavy has a history of injuries, I really don't see how his value can get much higher in the offseason. Unless they're being offered crap...let me repeat that....unless they are being offered crap from 3-4 teams, then they should try to trade Peavy right now. Acquire as much young talent as possible, because the Sox are a bad veteran team right now, and that's the worst kind of team. We'll see what happens...I think he's getting traded before the deadline, but if he isn't, I'd like to hear what Hahn has to say in the aftermath (not that he's going to say what they were offered). DirtySox
Going to post this lovely response by everyone's favorite larry from SouthSideSox for those that are freaking out that Peavy won't be traded. let's be clear about what we get and don't get if peavy stays on the team until the offseason. the white sox get to pay him $5M. the white sox get to not take a look at a young starting pitcher. the white sox get whatever value he produces, which is utterly useless to them, if not counterproductive considering the white sox don’t really want his good production, they want to get a good draft position. they don’t get to sell the value of his starts in 2013, which constitutes more than a quarter of his remaining value. they don’t get as good of a return. they don’t get to use the additional payroll flexibility to potentially better shop one of their overpriced contracts. so out $5 million, out 25% of his trade value, out whatever lesser value his replacement produces, out of better ability to trade konerko, dunn, ramirez, etc. that’s why he’s gone by this time tomorrow. http://www.southsidesox.com/2013/7/29/4569...in-to-tampa-bay

cabiness42
Take Crain's place...? Except that Crain is on the DL so nobody needs to be called up to replace him. EDIT: Plus, a last place team is not having one of their best starting pitching prospects in their ML bullpen instead of starting at AAA. Jake
I don't think Peavy not making this season's starts necessarily affects his trade value. It affects his actual value, but I don't know that it means much in terms of trade return. The trade deadline, on the other hand, could be the best impetus for a great return in trade though. But I also believe it could signal a deal and of all people a guy no one heard of leaks it by accident. I think we hear something late tonight, like 12-2 am, I think Rick and Ben have been working on something the past two days and that's why it's been so quiet about Peavy on the Boston front the past 48 hours. Bring me Cecchini and 3 more top 30 spects I'm happy (Raunaundo preferably) Edited July 29, 2013 by Frank_Thomas35
DirtySox
QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jul 29, 2013 -> 06:10 PM) On the other hand, the pool of possible suitors could increase in the offseason. It's pretty big now, in a seller's market, for the playoff stretch run. In the offseason he will be under team control for less time then he is now, while there will also be free agent options and other trade options. You also are banking on him pitching well for the rest of this season and not hurting himself. Peavy is gone before tomorrow's start.
