I used to work with Carlson Gracie's interpreter, and he had/has a very interesting accent (ala Minotauro Norgiera) and I asked what language "they spoke" in Brazil. His answer was Portuguese.

I know that Brazilians speak Portuguese. Many of them learn Spanish as a second language. We're chatting

Because they do speak Portuguese, however it's not uncommon for Brazilians to know Spanish as that's what they speak in most of South/Central America.
