Luke Weaver in the 2nd round seems like it would be a pretty good pick.

Yep. I've been meaning to post as such but haven't gotten around to it. Especially true if the Sox end up with a prep pitcher with the 3rd pick. A fast-moving college arm with the second rounder would be ideal. Weaver is legit.

I'm achin' to get Brady with our 3rd pick.

AMIRITE??!?!?!?!?!?

Absolutely. Brady Aiken at #3 would be the best possible scenario. He throws 4 above average to + pitches. He hasn't been abused by his coaches. Could be a pretty fast moving high schooler with the ceiling of a ML Ace. I hope he falls to #3 but Houston would be nuts not to take him in my opinion.

Having Hoffman get injured was a punch in the gut for me because he was the guy that I wanted at #3. However, this seems to be shaping up nicely for the White Sox. Kyle Freeland from Evansville is very intriguing to me as well. If the White Sox want Rodon or Aiken, there is a good chance that one of them will be available. If they are both gone, they can choose between Freeland and Kolek. I think it's a win-win either way. Freeland is a LH starter with a 3 pitch mix that is both safe and an upside play. There's a good chance that Freeland will still get a lot better and he already has fantastic command. I like Kolek personally and wouldn't be upset with that pick but if given the scenario, taking Freeland at #3 wouldn't upset me either. It's getting closer guys but the bottom line is that the Sox need to hit with this pick.

Kolek could probably close games for us down the stretch

Kolek is a starting pitcher, if he aj closing games for the Sox then they failed at developing him properly.

I think he means have him relieve in the majors this year instead of starting in the minors, a la Chris Sale.

Except there are many starting pitchers with his profile that end up as bullpen guys. He has a big fastball but not much else at this time, if nothing else develops - which is a real possibility given the track record of high school pitchers - you are looking at a bullpen guy at best.

How many starting pitchers profile with a good curveball and the fastest fastball of the draft era?

Not really sure, there was James Taillon that through 99 in HS, but his secondary offerings, SL and CU were considered plus at the time he was drafted. Maybe Mike Foltynewicz and Jeremy Jeffress are good comps in terms of repertoire, but he has the physique of Matt Hobgood. Not really a long track record of HS RHP's going near the top of the draft over the last 15 years.

I remember thinking Hobgood had the greatest scouting video I'd ever seen

Tallion is currently one of the top SP prospects in baseball...I'm failing to see why this would be bad now.

NC State, with the best pitcher in this draft class and one of the best position players, was bounced from the ACC tournament on day one.

Kyle Freeland pitched poorly and Evansville is out as well.

Rodon pitched poorly in his last start, but overall was stronger in the 2nd half. It's good he's done, it means he can rest his arm longer this summer.

Yes, and he had two plus secondary pitches coming into the draft, Kolek has one average level secondary pitch. Kolek may be able to develop good secondary stuff, but your scouts have to have determined his feel for pitching and whether he has the potential for developing that stuff, something he has never needed before. Aiken on the other hand has four secondary offerings, three of which are considered plus.

People fall in love with a big fastball because it can set up the secondary offerings, but I'll take a good mix over it in most starting prospects.
