Rios, $1M traded to Rangers

If Rios doesn't get moved today, you figure the Sox will put him on the waiver list. Do you think he gets claimed by anyone or passes through?

You figure at least Pitts would put a claim in and then we're right back here again. Other than Pitts, I don't really see anybody wanting to take a chance on the Sox just letting them take his contract.

No way would the Pirates claim him and risk having to take on that entire contract.

It better be some darn good prospects. That said, I think the Pirates go with Schierholtz to platoon with Tabata.

Unfortunately, I fear that you are right here. Pittsburgh just seems a bit conservative to me. They don't seem willing to trade away their top 10 prospects. This may be smart long term, but the last time I checked- they have not made the post season since 1993. If there was a year they would be more aggressive, its 2013.

If i was Hahn, I would offer Rios and Ramirez PLUS significant cash to Pittsburgh for Hansen, Holmes and another low level prospect. Efforts must be doubled here!!

I think the Yankees would claim Rios.

The Sox got a ton of money back from that Peavy deal. They can use some of that in a potential deal to send Rios to Pittsburgh.

I have to think that was part of the logic in taking a lower return and sending Peavy's entire contract to Boston. Now there are more suitors to bid for Rios since the Sox can eat most of his contract.

Yep. Rios is owed $17 million between this year and next. I would be okay if the Sox paid $10 million of that in attempt to get a teams top 5 prospect. The Sox would have still saved $27 million between Peavy and Rios even after such deal.

Wasn't it reported awhile back in this thread that Pittsburgh said they could absorb a big contract like Rios's if needed? Why not take a chance on claiming him and not losing any of their highly rated propsects? Obviously, a trade could still be worked out but, if I'm Pittsburgh and can take on the money, I absolutely claim him.

Hopefully it's a moot point and a trade gets worked out today.

Yeah, $10M sounds good to me. All of the $4.17M that he's owed for the rest of this year and $5.83M of the $12.5+$1M buyout he's owed for next year.

While Tim Kurkjian probably doesn't actually know anything, he says he thinks Rios does not get moved due to his contract and the perception around the league that he is not a winner. He says he thinks the White Sox will do "something" though

Exactly... hopefully Hahn is willing to offer the cash to bring in a guy like Hansen or Polanco. If i'm Pittsburgh and the White Sox offered $10 million and Alex Rios for Alen Hansen and a lower prospect, i'm saying yes. The city of Pittsburgh is desperate for a winner and RF is there blackhole. All they would have to pay is $7 million between the rest of this season AND all of next season.

I think the last obvious move on the list is clearing out Lindstrom, so I think at least that happens today.

I can't see it. They can't add payroll for next year and beyond.

They have a ton of money coming off the books next year, more than enough to absorb Rios if that's what they want to do.

How does a guy like Soriano count against the luxury tax for them? Is it the amount total or the amount they're paying?

What about De Aza instead of Schierholtz?

was wondering the same thing. i would think Rick woudld def be shopping De Aza out there as a cheap option to the Pirates if they do not want Rios contract

Premature evaluation...?

He at least deserves the next 2 months of observation before drawing ANY conclusions, and, even then...remember how we all felt based on 2012 that Tyler would be at least average/above-average defensively?

Well, that didn't work out quite so well.
