And yet they've already squandered 2 chances at a playoff birth by not making deadline moves and then falling apart in the 2nd half.

MLB tends to not be kind to teams that just assume they'll be even more competitive next year.

I was kind of hoping for a big trade with the Pirates. Sox send them Rios, Ramirez, and a lot of cash. Pirates send back several high prospects kick starting the rebuild. I would root for the Pirate the rest of the way.

A hour left until the deadline. Moving Rios would free up another $18 million. The White Sox have established they won't eat salary.

I thought the whole point of not including money in the Peavy deal was to allow flexibility in our Rios/Ramirez trade possibilities.

This just pisses me off if it's actually true. What do they think is more expensive, eating a couple million now or preventing our ability to get better prospects and thus delaying our ability to compete even longer.

Well not including money in the Peavy deal allows for offseason spending too. Cant completely simplify what happened yesterday into some immediate-consequence narrative

I'd bet he's just going off the fact that we didn't eat any money in the Peavy deal.

I don't believe anything any chicago reporter says about our future direction.

If you don't eat money, you get the pitching prospects like you got for Peavy. If you do eat $5 million or so you get the equivalent of Simon Castro. I don't blame them for not eating money.

If you don't eat the money, I'm not sure you'll find a deal at all.

You are probably right, but eating a lot of money isn't going to bring back a future all star. Teams are not dumb. It's harder than ever to pry away their best prospects.

If the White Sox truly refuse to send any money then they are sending a giant middle finger to the fans.

It's much more likely IMO that the Sox were willing to eat some money but Pittsburgh wasn't willing to part with a top-flight guy to make eating that money worthwhile.

I agree. However, I feel like eating 5mill and getting some c level spects + 14mill in savings is better than Rios. But, hey, I wouldn't be heartbroken if he's here.

What does that term mean, btw? Just filler?

Yeah typically these are players that aren't expected be major leaguers, and if so don't have ceilings much higher than bench players
