Balta1701
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 03:16 PM) Maybe I'm naive, but today makes me believe the Sox truly do feel they can contend next year. They certainly could in theory...but they need some of the stuff that has gone wrong this year to go right next year again. Starting, first and foremost, with the awful defense and fundamentals. Get that back to 2012 type performance and we can talk.
Jake
As much as I'd like to see Avisail up here, I'm not giving up Rios for nothing. Avisail could use some refinement as it is. He's hardly played a season's worth of games above A-ball
iamshack
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 12:15 PM) Yes Rios is not a bad player. If we're just eating money to not have him on our team, it makes no sense to do that. I'm with DA on this one...there is no reason to pay Rios to play for another team. If we were bulging at the seams with mlb-ready talent, it would be one thing. But we aren't.
Soxfest
Pirates have worst RF production in baseball...............make a deal for Rios. Make a splash Pirates. Edited July 31, 2013 by Soxfest
bigruss
QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 02:09 PM) Well not including money in the Peavy deal allows for offseason spending too. Cant completely simplify what happened yesterday into some immediate-consequence narrative The FA class is really week, and the top guys are going to get PAID. I don't see the Sox going after any of those guys (maybe McCann since Flowers busted so bad) but I really believe the Sox are eyeing a rebuild. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 02:10 PM) I'd bet he's just going off the fact that we didn't eat any money in the Peavy deal. I don't believe anything any chicago reporter says about our future direction. Very well could be his thinking, which is why I said if true. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 02:10 PM) If you don't eat money, you get the pitching prospects like you got for Peavy. If you do eat $5 million or so you get the equivalent of Simon Castro. I don't blame them for not eating money. If you eat enough, you should get someone better than Castro.

If we were bulging at the seams with mlb-ready talent, it would be one thing. But we aren't. They pay him to play for another team so they can get good prospects so they can rebuild. Right now they're just dumping salary and will be fielding an even worse team next year.
Balta1701
QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 03:18 PM) This off season will be a very interesting one. Actually, might not be all that interesting. The Sox are sitting there with a roster right now that they could field in 2014. They need a couple bullpen arms and a bench to do that, but if they wanted to, they could do very little. Right now they're just dumping salary and will be fielding an even worse team next year. The assumption though is that some team is willing to offer "Good" prospects for Rios if the sox chip in money. There are signs that assumption is not true. We will find out in 40 minutes but always felt that was the plan. It is nice that we are swimming in money and our rotation will cost less than 20 million next year. I'm guessing we add a bunch of midlevel free agents.

TaylorStSox
My favorite part about Rios is that he really brings out the mouth-breather in fans. I can only imagine this must be what it's like to be a Bears fan. If you don't get what you want. Hold on to him and trade him next deadline when he will have more value. I guess you are putting down all those not so high on Alex Rios. If you want to see the true "mouth-breathers" go back to the first few pages of this thread and look at what people thought Rios could bring in a trade. Turns out, once again, Greg was correct. I do agree he could have more value a year from now. He will be playing for a payday. Edited July 31, 2013 by Dick Allen

And a dead clock is correct twice a day. Look, if you just rip on every single player we have, you're going to be more correct than not these days. The problem is Greg's rationale for these opinions he has...which is nonsense almost in each and every case.
