Rios, $1M traded to Rangers

I really don't think the Yankees can either. I'm not entirely certain of how luxury tax problems work, but I'm guessing that, if the Yankees assuming Rios' contract, they will be stuck with his full luxury cap hit this year, even if they only pay 1/3 of his salary. Pretty sure $12.5 mill puts the Yankees over the luxury tax, so they can't afford him either. Even if that's not the case, it's still another $4+ mill at this point plus another $12.5 mill next year against the tax too. On top of that, I'm quite sure the Rangers could afford him if necessary.

All that said, I think he will clear waivers, if he hasn't already.

I guess with the Yankees it depends on when ARod's suspension takes effect and how much they save there.

It depends a whole lot on how MLB treats Soriano's salary and Wells's salary, actually (and well, ARoid's also). The Cubs are paying all but about $5 million next year and the Angels are paying almost everything Wells is owed. The Yankees have a ton of money to spend. They have something less than $100 million committed next year, they literally have $100 million coming off the books. They're going to have to spend $25 million a year on Cano, they're probably going to have to spend $25 million on free agent pitchers and a closer, maybe a bit more. That would put them in the range of $150. If they have to count the $30 million+ that the Cubs and angels are paying and ARoid's salary, then they'd be right on the border of the tax next year. If they don't have to count those numbers, then they can still make a big free agent haul and have a lot of extra money to play with.

Stone quite clearly just said that the Rangers were expecting Cruz to appeal his suspension and were caught very off guard when he accepted it.

Quite foolish of them unless they offered him an extension to go along with his appeal.

It would explain why they made zero deadline moves and could leave them more desperate now.

Well I'm getting the feeling that Adam might not make it to them on waivers...not sure about Alex.

Um....good?

Yeah, I meant not good for Texas.

Although I'm still in the keep these two around camp unless you actually can get something of value.

Too much to be gained by just letting Dunn go for best offer. 1B audition for Wilkins the last month, the option to keep Konerko on a 1-year deal if he wants to come back, and getting ~$15M off the payroll.

Out of curiosity, who do you think would block Texas?

Well it depends what the exact order ends up being when he's placed on waivers. Could be Cleveland, Baltimore, or especially Kansas City.

KC will block us on everything.

Then saddle up their payroll or at least consider it. They could end up with Dunn and Rios. I'm fine giving them all of that salary and seeing how they deal with it. Or at least making that threat and then sending some cash instead and working out a deal. I always remember when someone did that with Randy Myers and ended up stuck with him.

I think someone probably does claim all three of these guys but I wouldn't be surprised if they slid through purely because teams will be very cautious knowing the Sox are in rebuilding mode and they have to be damn sure they can afford them in their entirety (if they did in fact make a claim).

What does that do for us though? Dunn is our best hitter by far and at the very least will get us a decent piece at next year's deadline if he keeps hitting like he is. Everyone these days can always use power. They won't risk claiming Dunn and Rios at the same time, but we aren't going to salary dump either anyways.

Not necessarily. They'd run the risk of the Sox just giving them the contract, like how we got Rios in the first place.

No way the cheap ass Royals will risk that. Paying Rios or Dunn next year? Cmon. No way. This team is owned by Wal Mart for gosh sakes.

You think the entire NL passes up on those guys? I'm thinking the Pirates could claim Rios before it ever gets to the AL.

Well, considering waiver priority begins with the league in which the player currently resides I'd say that's unlikely.
