Buehrle>Wood
Seems like it is an awful return in terms of the players but I guess there is hope for Arietta.
Chisoxfn
They get cash to pick up some more international players too, which can be beneficial (well...Cubs have to use their own money..but they now have the ability to do it). That is worth something. I would have liked to see what Coop could have done with someone like Arietta who never lived up to his hype. LittleHurt05
QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 2, 2013 -> 12:50 PM) Is it just me or is that not a good return? Stop is already 28 and sucks this year after being unhittable in 2012, which happens with bullpen guys. Prospect guys have always loved Arrieta, but he has to yet get major league hitters out and is already 27.
Paulstar
I think Arrietta is a great return. He has great stuff when he is on, and if he finds that right connection with the right pitching coach, he can possibly live up to that hype of being an ace. harfman77
That seems like a pretty good return for a half season of Scott bleepin Feldman. Cubs get two controllable players that can build value with them and acquire additional pool money to couple with the pool money they received from the Astros today. Arrieta is still valuable, probably more valuable than Feldman has ever been up until this season. This is good for the Sox though, as the Orioles will probably be looking for another SP at the deadline after they realize they got taken. The guy was hot garbage four months ago, and probably won't sustain what he has done in '
witesoxfan
The O's have had luck with guys like Feldman, but this is a good return for a guy the Cubs signed this offseason. This is the perfect example of why you sign guys like this to one and two year deals, because then you can usually trade them for something useful down the road. I really like this deal for the Cubs. CaliSoxFanViaSWside
Marmol was sent to the Dodgers for Matt Guerrier also , though it's probably in the Cubs thread already.

Two straight years now where Theo and company did a great job of signing someone with the sole purpose of hoping they performed well so they could trade them. Maholm last year, and now Feldman. Maholm last year, and now Feldman. Mitigated somewhat by screwing up the Dempster deal, getting nothing for Marmol and really looking to be in trouble with the Edwin Jackson contract. Maholm last year, and now Feldman. Except they have no arms on the horizon. Arrieta will be 29 before that team has any chance. Really not rocket science, they need a rotation and are not finding one. They tried with Baker and will do so this offseason.

I think they have done way more good than bad though. That contract was market value for Jackson. Dempster screwed up the deal not the Cubs. Dempster screwed up the deal not the Cubs. I think it was you that mentioned this in the other thread, but thankfully the new spending rules are in place for the draft/Intl' signings. If not, the Cubs would have definitely been a top spender.

Pitching is hard to come by which is why Hahn's job is easier than Theo and Theo has made no inroads in this area. Sale solves a major rebuilding issue. Lee hasn't hit the majors yet, but none of the other pieces have done a whole lot. Garza has been pretty good. That trade is pretty dependent upon Archer and Lee panning out. Jake
Thinking about it more, it's pretty much crap for crap. The international $ is nice, but it is unclear to me how much it is (anyone have this info?). The super-geniuses over in Cub-land would have had us believe their precious trade pieces would have netted them more than some reclamation projects, though. I guess the trade market hasn't lost its mind yet.
