Joxer_Daly
I'm not at all familiar with the players in our farm system, so looking forward to seeing this dude and hopefully he'll show what the fuss is about.
winninguglyin83
Don't expect an all-star. Expect a solid player who should be better than Flowers in nearly every area, once he settles in and relaxes. At least the passed balls should slow down. With fewer Ks.
Balta1701
QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 08:43 AM) Don't expect an all-star. Expect a solid player who should be better than Flowers in nearly every area, once he settles in and relaxes. At least the passed balls should slow down. With fewer Ks. Don't expect him to hit right away. Expect that he may need more than a season to adapt to big league pitching. Expect that he'll come up and hit worse than Flowers. That should be the expectation with every prospect.

DirtySox
QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 07:43 AM) Don't expect an all-star. Expect a solid player who should be better than Flowers in nearly every area, once he settles in and relaxes. At least the passed balls should slow down. With fewer Ks. I expect similar defense and better hitting (eventually). His defense has supposedly improved, but it's by no means his calling card. I'd also be surprised if they aren't splitting playing time, at least initially. Edited July 5, 2013 by DirtySox
Balta1701
QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 08:43 AM) At least the passed balls should slow down.Phegley has 8 passed balls in 60 games in Charlotte. Flowers has 7 passed balls in 65 games in Chicago. I'd also like to think the breaking stuff might be a bit easier to catch in the minors. You should not expect this at all. You'd think you'd see guys feature more breaking stuff (because 89 MPH fastballs are pretty easy to hit) and you'd see worse control of it. Phegley said in his interview with Soxtalk that the nastiest pitch he has seen was Chris Sale's slider.

flavum
We just have to look at the rest of the season as evaluation for 2014 and beyond. Wins and losses don't matter. If Phegley struggles, it's just part of the deal.
LittleHurt05
I have to root for a Hoosier? Ugh. Took at a glance at his minor league numbers, is there any reason to think 2013 isn't a fluke? .966 OPS this year, previous best season was a .743. Phegley was considered a very good and talented hitter coming out of college, but in his second year he was diagnosed with ITP. It took some time, but he was finally able to get some control of it last year and he has been quite healthy this year. If the health remains, there's no reason to think he can't be a good bat. I don't believe this at all. guys in the majors also have more control of their pitches too. you see more wild pitches in the minors than you do the majors. On the other hand, he developed a serious illness shortly after becoming a pro that caused him to miss nearly an entire season. He then continued to be fairly aggressively promoted despite not being all that successful at the plate, most likely due to his age. He had dealt with some injuries in years past as well. This is his first year repeating a level, so it very well may be that he's just finally gotten a chance to be healthy and comfortable. farmteam
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 10:27 AM) I have to root for a Hoosier? Ugh. Hell yeah! I'm excited. That year (2009), Indiana was the only school to have 3 draft picks in the top 50 (Eric Arnett, Matt Bashore and Phegley). Arnett was struggling with Milwaukee and I think they had converted him to a reliever. I haven't looked up Bashore in a while.
southsider2k5
I would say there is a pretty good chance no one claims Gimenez and he ends up at Charlotte.

caulfield12
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 02:20 PM) If it were a consideration, they wouldn't have waited until July 5 to recall him. They would have done it weeks ago. Back in May, GM Rick Hahn said that Phegley "is showing himself capable of potentially being an impact catcher at the Major League level." In addition to a career-best .316/.368/.597 triple slash over 258 plate appearances, Phegley has mashed 15 home runs for Triple-A Charlotte.
