If it were a consideration, they wouldn't have waited until July 5 to recall him. They would have done it weeks ago.

Back in May, GM Rick Hahn said that Phegley "is showing himself capable of potentially being an impact catcher at the Major League level." In addition to a career-best .316/.368/.597 triple slash over 258 plate appearances, Phegley has mashed 15 home runs for Triple-A Charlotte.

I'm not saying it was the only reason but most teams do take it into serious consideration to start the arbitration clock later which saves them money.

Reasons to bring him up before Super 2 date .

1. Was having a good year.

2. Sox catchers struggling.

Reasons not to bring him up before Super 2

1.Sox save money by starting arbitration clock later.

2. Give Flowers more time to improve.

3. Since it's Phegley 1st really good season in the minors give him more time to sustain that success.

4. Wait to see if the Sox could turn around their losing ways.

5 Sox record for what was considered to be a very favorable part of their schedule from 6/14 to end of June , 4-12. The point at which everyone offically knew the Sox had no chance to compete, making call up much more likely.

If that were the reason he wasn't here, he would have been called up a few weeks ago when that deadline passed.

I'm still not sure this isn't too early to give him the callup.

I added a 5th reason in my edit before I saw the last 2 posts. Took me a few minutes to finish the research which goes hand in hand with my 4th reason. If the Sox had gone 12-4 instead of 4 -12 Phegley might still be in the minors.

Don't expect him to hit right away. Expect that he may need more than a season to adapt to big league pitching. Expect that he'll come up and hit worse than Flowers. That should be the expectation with every prospect.

I remember a couple of years ago the "Free Viciedo" slogans. Then after Pods left, the cry for Owens.

If you honestly believe that anyone was worried about Josh Phegley obtaining Super 2 status and that was the reason he was not called up until a few days ago, well, there's not really much to discuss. Completely differing opinions.

Ventura said that Flowers and Phegley will split time 50/50.

Dumb-----.

They should have played Phegley tonight, and Flowers the day game after the night game.

I guess Josh will play tomorrow. If he doesn't, there should be a minor investigation.

If he splits their time 50/50 he should be fired. If your going to do that, we'd be better off sending Phegley back down

Phegley is one guy we should be happy if robin gives him exceptionally large amounts of rest. He is not a guy we should be playing 8 out of 10 games right now. Take it easy on him at lest for this year, let him build up strength with time. 5 or 6 out of 10.

I dunno. I have mixed feelings. While I feel Flowers has had his chance at full time and we know what he can and can't do, what does it matter at this point? I don't think it's as valuable to Phegley to play full time at Charlotte where he has already proven himself as it is to be in the majors getting experience even if it's every other day that he's playing.

Flowers had his shot. That's not the reason to go easy on Phegley. If he played only 41 more games he match his total for last year.

I hope they gradually increase Phegley's time as it isn't exactly easy to only play every other day

Seems like the perfect way how NOT to help a hitter develop his timing and comfort level...

I get it that Phegley has battled health problems since being drafted.

Nevertheless, the fact is, they have to know if he can stand up to playing 5 or 6 time per week at the major league level if they want to seriously consider him as a potential starter in 2014.

They should just assume he can't for now. Even if he takes over the position with the bat, you still go into next season worrying a ton about his long term health and conditioning. Nothing he does this year would convince me he will play 145 games next year.

Guessing Flowers is up tonight because Sale is pitching? Sale has only pitched to him this season, right?

And Phegley will start tmrw with the day game after the night game...

Although most of us would have preferred to see if Phegley could keep the momentum going from last night.

Robin Ventura doesn't have split in mind w/ catchers. Think Phegley gets bulk now as long as he performs. Sounds like he'll go w/ hot hand.

Makes sense.
