Dick Allen
Phegley looks good. Of course 3 or 4 games into this season, Flowers looked like an all star. Hopefully, Phegley can keep Flowers glued to the bench.
South Side Fireworks Man
If he shows he really can hit in the big leagues, I'd like to see Phegley wind up as the full time DH/third catcher next season.
Jake
One of the "issues" with Phegley as a prospect was a supposed lack of ability to get loft on balls. He would square up what should be home run balls and just hit line drive singles. You could see yesterday that he does indeed possess an ability to turn around a good fastball and put some air under it. I'm guessing that that is a new development. You can see a different issue commonly cited with him, that he has a bit of an issue catching the ball. He hasn't dropped anything with men on base yet, though. He does block balls well, which is one of the funniest things about him. Scouts report that he blocks balls fabulously well, but gets passed balls frequently on balls he doesn't catch. Luckily, he's been able to catch a bunch of guys he's worked with in AAA so far in the big leagues. We might see a bit more of this stuff as he catches guys he's never seen before. witesoxfan
If you actually read the ITP wiki...taking the source for what it's worth, wiki is still pretty good...it appears an ITP diagnosis is actually a bit of a blessing. To actually come up with that diagnosis, they actually rule out a lot of very serious conditions before they can make that diagnosis, most notably leukemia, HIV, and hepatitis C. Total novice guess here, but I'm guessing ITP itself isn't incredibly dangerous or serious but rather that they have to make sure it isn't anything else before hand, though a low platelet count is never a good thing and that isn't to say you don't need to be on a strict regimen to recover to full strength. I can't hold my breath until I see him hit when pitchers have a better plan for him. Not trying to be cynical.

That's better than the last prospect to come up during a s***ty season and hit home runs.

Jake
QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jul 9, 2013 -> 12:54 PM) I don't think you're being cynical at all. In fact, that's a good point. Seeing how he adjusts to pitchers after the league adjusts to him will be a huge part of his rookie season. This is often something we don't get a good look at until the second season
greg775
I don't want to over-react, but I like what I see in Phegley. I loved after today's victory over Detroit he stood out on the field and greeted every Sox player as they ran past him toward the dugout. I'm thinking out of all our players, he at least acts like he cares more than anybody else. Some of you don't care about intangibles ... I like his intangibles. Now for his performance. He has four hits in 20 at bats. Three have been home runs. Today's homer won a game. Now an optimist could love his eight RBIs. A pessimist could be bummed by his six strikeouts against no walks and say he's just another lift and pull member of the White Sox (albeit it's just 20 at bats). At the risk of your wrath (people are going to get all mad and say we're talking about 20 measly at bats), I want to ask you ... Is Josh Phegley going to be a stud?? Or another lift and pull .210 type hitter? I like Hawk's comparison to Brian Downing. I like Phegley. Do you?? Jake
Phegley won't be a lift and pull .210 hitter, I can promise you that. He might a s***ty .210 hitter or a .300 hitter with some pop, but he won't be an all or nothing guy. He'll much more likely be all....or nothing. If that makes sense. I think there's guarded optimism since we're working on less than a week's worth of games. He looked really bad Tuesday (0-5, 2 three-pitch SO's that I remember, 2 passed balls), and is only batting .200 overall, but so far his hits have added spark (and in yesterday's case, like you said, it was the difference in the game). I think there's a few things to watch: ( a) how he does handling the grind of catching in the bigs 4-5 days a week ( b) how his offense is affected once pitchers get more data on him ( c) if he starts slumping, how he handles not being the toast of the town anymore I personally think ( c) will be the most interesting. It's easy to have a great attitude and be high-fiving your teammates when you're on top of the world. But if reality sets in and he begins to cool off, how he reacts to that will tell you what kind of player/teammate he is. I think we've seen the everyday pressure and fan negativity affect Flowers this year more than most people realize (although I think no matter what, Phegley will have a longer leash with fans because he's a rookie). elrockinMT
Saw the game on MLB=Network yesterday and it was the first time I saw Phegley. I liked the fact that he made contact and lifted fly balls and then of course the grand slam. But, I hesitate to anoint him the next Sherm Lollar or Fisk. We need to see how he progresses

We need to see how he progresses Every ball he's getting under and putting in the air to left field... Not sure how well that will work long-term. He has barely missed a couple more homers, just underneath. Missed it by 1/16th of an inch, dad gummit!

Balta1701
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 08:48 AM) Don't expect him to hit right away. Expect that he may need more than a season to adapt to big league pitching. Expect that he'll come up and hit worse than Flowers. That should be the expectation with every prospect. Time for a bump. Josh Phegley is now hitting .207 on the season with a .617 OPS. Tyler Flowers is hitting .205 on the season with a .629 OPS. The countdown is on until ST turns on him, declares him a bust, says it was a mistake to call him up, that he was called up too early, that he's "not a good player", that he has a terrible approach, that he has no talent, that it's the organization's fault, that they never develop hitters, that he will never learn to hit, and that they need to DFA him immediately. I give it another week.
