Gordon Beckham

That he has finally "figured it out"??

He's looking good at the plate and it seems the times where he's getting completely blown away

is nearly non existent from the limited AB's I've seen out of him this year.

After 147 AB's, he has a .347 BA and .817 OPS. I know we have him under control for another

year or two but is this the time to sign him to a team friendly extension?

If we wait until the end of the year, and he finished the year hitting somewhere around .320

with a .800 + OPS, he may just choose to ride out his arbitration year or two and go for the

bigger payday.

He's a marketable guy and could be a decent guy to build around to keep the average fan excited

about the team as well.

Please discuss.

A month of good baseball is not worth an extension. If he is still hitting like this next year, then offer an extension. If he does not take it, that is a risk I take.

Was going to make this thread today, I think it's officially time to be excited about Beckham's season. Ya, he's been a pretty big disappointment so far in the MLB, but that doesn't take away from the fact that he may have figured this out. He should be a piece of the Sox future without a doubt.

Depending on what happens the next three weeks, it would be nice if he can bat 2nd or even 3rd for two months. If they're going to give him a sizable extension, they should be able to lean on him for production at the top of the lineup.

For sure. Gotta make sure he has gotten over mental midget syndrome.

Plus I don't think waiting is going to cost us much. Like Peavy, he knows he sucked and we stuck with him. It'll be a fair deal for both if it happens.

Beckham's BABIP is 92 points higher than his career mark and he's hitting for the worst power of his career. Obviously the latter part has come around recently, but let's wait for his numbers to normalize a bit before thinking about an extension.

You're right, his career BABIP is .286 (it was .252 last year), but the IsoBABIP is fine. BABIP matters a little less for hitters than pitchers too because hitters can actually improve and start improve and get more hits on balls in play, but IsoBABIP will remain largely the same. He'll come down some, but there are a lot of signs of progress: he's making better contact than ever, his line drive percentage is up, and his flyball percentage is down. A lot of this has been due to his aggression at the plate - he's swinging 3% more often, and making more contact overall too - both pitches inside and outside the zone.

With his arbitration status, the longer you wait, the less chance you are able to work out an extension (but conversely, the longer you wait, the more likely something changes that makes an extension seem like a bad idea)

150 PA combined with new approach is enough to be cautiously optimistic.

This. 150 PA is not something to scoff at, but it's obviously not enough to warrant an extension.

That said, I would love to see him keep it up, as I'm sure all of us would. I have and will continue to wear my Beckham "jersey" that I bought in '09. If we sign him to an extension and he keeps this up, I'll even put my Beckham wall hanging sign back up!

If you notice in the commercials they've been running recently, a little kid was shown wearing a Beckham jersey (maybe confused and thought it was David Beckham?)

At any rate, it wasn't Chris Sale or Paul Konerko.

Hawk's PR work on behalf of Gordon has been paying off in spades.

Now what's he gonna cost at the arbitration table? Bend over, Jerry.

A 2B with a PROBABLE 700-750 OPS by the end of the year...not as much as Carlos Quentin would have, for example.

All they have to do is get rid of DeAza and/or Keppinger (plus Crain/Thornton) for next year and it would more than free up the needed money, assuming he can keep this up for 2 1/2 more months, which is debatable.

Let me get this straight. The Sox are running an ad that shows a kid wearing a Beckham shirt and you equate that to a PR campaign led by Harrelson? Where do you come up with this s***?

I was joking about Harrelson.

Have you been listening to him praising and cheering especially hard for Gordon Beckham, this season in particular? Am I the only one that notices this? I can't believe that's the case. You would have believed his returning to the defense as the prodigal 2B would bring the White Sox back in the pennant race single-handedly and simultaneously part the Red Sea or at least Lake Michigan or the Chicago River.

I just thought it was interesting that a Beckham jersey would appear....it's still probably one of the most popular jerseys in the park, despite the disappointing 2010-2011-2012 seasons for Gordon.

The kids seem to really like him, and that's the main thing, I guess. Marketing.

Caulfield is correct. Hawk has really been on the Beckham Bandwagon lately. Yesterday he called him the best hitter on the team (or was it Stone), he has always talked about his energy, defense, etc. Not that it isn't true. Even when GB pulled his bonehead play and wiped out the 3B on that pop up, Hawk went easy on him. I still would like to know if he could play short on a regular basis.

I want to reevaluate after the trade deadline. Another couple weeks of hitting would be nice...but the thing I really want to evaluate is the remnants of the team following removal of players and the financial situation.

If you want to compete in the future you do not trade Gordon Beckham. You need a group to build around and strength up the middle is critical. I am not even sure you would trade an Alexei Ramirez. We have some folks not having good years but that doesn't mean they aren't good players and won't bounce back

Would you guys give Beckham a 3 year deal at $10 million right now? Would he even take it? Or are you guys saying that we should wait and sign him to like a 5-6 year below market at season's end if he keeps this up? Either way, he'd still be a tradeable asset whenever.

If a deal you suggest was possible the answer is YES in a heartbeat
