flavum
3 more K's for Hawkins. I'd like to know of some examples of good major league players that were ever really bad in the minors. I'm sure there are some examples, but did they ever hit under .200 with astronomical K rates, and horrible OBPs? winninguglyin83
Jacob May also scuffling big time after his promotion. Joe Borchard was a whiff king -- only 158 Ks in nearly 600 PAs in first full season at AA. Dunn? Only 101 Ks in in 538 PAs in Midwest League when he was 20. Hawkins is alarming. fathom
Tim Anderson with 3 more K, as he's striking out a lot more than expected. Semien continues to impress

I'm sure there are some examples, but did they ever hit under .200 with astronomical K rates, and horrible OBPs? Great question. Jeromy Burnitz is so far the best example I can come up with. He was pretty terrible in AAA at 23 years old, but his K rate was never anywhere near that bad in the minors.

winninguglyin83
Maybe the next move Hahn needs to make is a minor league hitting instructor for the entire system.
Marty34
Hawkins might be dangerously close to being a bust already. Remember Cubs draft pick, Earl Cunningham?

As long as instructor is an ex-Sox. Please continue to keep everything in-house.
flavum
It's almost like they have to do something with Hawkins right now, but what? Can you just pull the plug on his season, send him to Instructional League, and start all over next year?

He was pretty terrible in AAA at 23 years old, but his K rate was never anywhere near that bad in the minors. There have to be more guys who struggled offensively early in their careers, made adjustments, and put it all together. Piazza was pretty mediocre his first two minor league seasons (posted a .670 OPS in year 2). Albeit, nothing like Hawkins.
2nd_city_saint787
Not sure where to put this...Any chance we see Rienzo get the start in the double header tomorrow? Unless they're thinking of showcasing Santiago, wouldn't it make some sense to give Hector some time off? He's probably on an innings limit this year right? Rienzo has been doin work lately so it'd be nice to reward him with a cup of coffee.

Rienzo has been doin work lately so it'd be nice to reward him with a cup of coffee. Danks and Santiago are starting today. Veal is coming up to replace Thornton, and Ventura said they aren't allowed to bring up a 26th man when the doubleheader is the day after the rain out---which I don't know if that's true. I wasn't aware that was the rule, and I'm not sure why one doubleheader is any different than another. Bruce_Blixton
QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jul 13, 2013 -> 10:13 AM) Could that really be the issue? I mean obviously his plate discipline is trash but is there any examples of guys who had a resurgence after addressing eye issues? Brian McCann comes to mind. Bubba Starling just had LASIK surgery this year after a horrible start, so there is precedent.

Can you just pull the plug on his season, send him to Instructional League, and start all over next year? When a player shows a high likelihood of never getting it together ( and I'm not saying Hawkins is in that category) I think you have to tell him he needs to change his whole approach and or technique. Hire a private hitting instructor to work with him trying all kinds of different batting stances, bat positions , crouching , standing up straight and everything in between. Give that instructor some resources to hire amatuer pitchers of different abilities to throw to him if thats possible and/or legal. Work on just making contact with a player with high K rates but a lot of strength. Break him down completely and start over. There's too much invested in Hawkins to care about hiring an instructor for say 50K for the offseason and giving him another 25K for expenses. Tell him every penny of that 25K must be documented with receipts. I'm sure some savvy independent league pitchers would be willing to make a few extra thousand . flavum
QUOTE (danman31 @ Jul 12, 2013 -> 08:55 PM) Great question. Jeromy Burnitz is so far the best example I can come up with. He was pretty terrible in AAA at 23 years old, but his K rate was never anywhere near that bad in the minors. I went through players in the majors that hit over 250 career homers. Nobody had a season like Hawkins, with the low batting average, high K rate, and low OBP. He has 102 K's in 57 games. That's worthy of calling him a bust already, but it would be pretty unfair to put that on a 19 year-old. But if he doesn't turn it around this season or in 2014, he's done as a hitter. The good ones are just good, even at 19 or 20.
