HeGone7
Can't help but wonder how much of the gamesmanship is affecting these deals. Let's face it, Hahn does not have an easy task first year as GM and I think that will ultimately hurt the Sox. GM's around the league will be more then willing to test his brass. If Hahn is simply playing hardball, and deals are out there, then I do hope it doesn't bite us in the rear. If he fails to make moves, I wouldn't be shocked to see the "we weren't going to give anyone away and we think we can compete 2014" talk to pick-up. But I disagree they will start saying "we think we can compete in 2014' I don't think Sox fans are that dumb and they won't cater to that low denominator. Baron
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 28, 2013 -> 10:36 PM) I don't think I'll be screaming if we are able to move Rios and Dunn. I'll probably be concerned if the Sox send a lot of money with those guys because I believe that will affect our future payroll. I would not be mad if this happened. ... Rios- Traded for 2 prospects of any kind (good prospects, bad prospects dnt matter) and sending NO MONEY with him. Dunn - See Rios trade. Peavy - Trade him for one good prospect, one prospect of any kind and send NO MONEY. So I am not asking for much. If we trade Sale or Reed I'd like 2-3 STUDS in return please. I cant stress this enough but I am so glad you arent a GM.

To the people who are dead set against sending money with Peavy and Rios, what exactly do you think the Sox are going to do with that money? Konerko and Thornton are already coming off the books. Sale is the only one currently under contract who has significant salary increases looming. The arbitration group (De Aza, Beckham, Viciedo) aren't exactly playing themselves into huge contracts. Reed, Jones, and Santiago are two years away from getting bigger money, and Quintana is three years away. So a ton of savings isn't needed to fund the current group. Huge free agent deals are proving to be a terrible idea all over the place (ARod, Pujols, Hamilton). The Sox got off relatively lucky with Dunn in that he was only given 4 years and still found some productive streaks here and there. If eating salary, up to about half of the remaining deals, nets significantly better talent as compared to not eating any salary, then it's 100% the way to go. Now, eating more than half starts to become counterproductive, but saying that the Sox should eat $0 is shortsighted.

Are people here really dead set against sending money with guys...or are people here recognizing that the White Sox have in recent memory been very hesitant to send money along with guys? They'll eat a bit in order to move a guy at the end of his contract like Thome or Iguchi...but usually if a guy needs to have money sent with him in order to move to a team, the Sox just hold the guy/. Yes, read all the posts, there are people who are dead set against sending money with guys. They must be under the delusion that the $13M they don't send with Peavy and Rios for 2014 is going to make some kind of magical difference. Adam Dunn goes for $14M on the market, but somehow there's a magical free agent out there that the Sox can get for $13M who will be the difference-maker in 2014, at the expense of getting better prospects back in the trade who will make the team better in 2015 and beyond. Well personally I don't think the Sox would get anything of value for Dunn even if they sent some money along. Sending some money along might make him moveable though. Sending some money along might make him moveable though. Sorry, I didn't mean to confuse you. I wasn't talking about trading Dunn. The $13M is essentially half of of the Peavy/Rios contracts for 2014, and I mentioned Adam Dunn and his $14M as a comparison as to what the Sox could buy with that $13M saved. No pressure, or anything. Yep... Hahn has a chance to add a few top prospects, shed salary, and get a top 3 pick in draft next summer. I really hope he doesn't squander this opportunity. The last thing I want to hear after the dead line is "we didn't like the packages offered to us for peavy and rios and we feel comfortable with them moving forward to 2014" That will not be acceptable , Rick. This team stinks and we need to move in a different direction.

LVSoxFan
Does anybody seriously believe that Dunn is going anywhere? I don't. As for Rios, if we're hesitant to "send money" with him combined with his known head issues I would guess he's staying put too unless somebody's that desperate for an outfielder and/or think they can motivate... a veteran. What I am looking forward too though is this place after the deadline, because if Han "sits on his hands" the posts will be epic and if he makes some serious moves we have a lot to talk about!
