Jerksticks
2014 Rotation looks like: Sale Peavy/Johnson/Other Quintana Santiago Danks Is this the plan? I really feel like our best and most realistic trade chip this offseason is one of Q or Santiago. Just seems too left-handed moving forward. But they are all so different so there's that I suppose. Does the front office mind going 4 lefty?
Rowand44
I hope they don't mind. Assuming Danks recovers a tad bit more they're all quality pitchers, who cares if they're all left handed?
beautox
It schould'nt matter about their handedness, Sale and Quintana are top ten AL pitchers, Santiagonshows an other worldly Arm and based off his potential could very well join them next year in that discussion and John Danks should return to normal after 18months back. The "real" question is what are they going to do when they have an all LH rotation in '15 with Rodon? Sale Santiago Quintana Danks Rodon
cabiness42
Thumbs up to both of the above posts. Good starting pitchers will get hitters out from both sides of the plate regardless of which hand they throw with. If your five best starting pitching options happen to be left-handed, then go ahead and have five left-handed starters. I don't think it's something you necessarily try to do, unless your home park has some very weird configuration that causes a huge hitting split. Chicago White Sox
I'm much more concerned about the lineup getting more left-handed than the rotation getting less left-handed.

Balta1701
If I had to bet based on my assessment of the org...I don't think they'd be willing to go with a rotation including 4 lefties. I think they're too conservative and unwilling to do things that aren't regularly done by everyone else in the league. I think we saw some of that with their continual moving of Santiago to the pen for whatever reason; they saw 4 lefties as risky but they won't tell you why. Yes, but which hand your pitchers throw with has no influence over how much your hitters suck.

Yea this is what I was getting at, thanks for continuing the conversation. I truly believe they don't like it either so we probably have a major trade coming before next season. So maybe the plan is to flip Peavy for MLB-ready RHSP. I'd love that.

I think there very well may be a major trade of one of these guys and/or Reed before next season. They are going to have to do something to fix the rest of the team, and that will probably means some trades. Should get 2 above average position players for one of these pitchers. Hopefully we'll go for players who haven't reached their prime, which would be a refreshing change.

Both Quintana and Santiago ought to cost a fortune in a trade, they're young starting pitchers with a ton of talent, team control for 4+ years, and top of the rotation starter ceilings. Maybe not number 1 guys, but these guys are pitching well enough to be #2-#3 starters on playoff teams right now and could easily get better with experience. The price for either of them ought to be "the price for a top of the rotation starter under control for a long time". Comparable maybe to the price for Matt Latos or something like that. The price for them ought to be so high that I wouldn't expect any team to really come out and meet it even if they're desperate for a LH starter. Danks of course is the one you'd like to move because of his salary, but there you have the issue of someone taking on his contract before he's fully healed and he could easily be expected to be even better next year. I think your price on Quintana is high. But regardless, we've got to do something to fix the defense and offense. It's atrocious. And I think teams will give us a good package for Quintana. Young cheap quality SPs are the most valued commodity in baseball and should be treated as such. The other thing to remember is that having young, cheap, quality SP's opens up the door to having a ton of money to spend on the free agent market or even on the trade market if some team is trying to move a person who is performing but not quite enough. The ability to take on money was one KW always used to his advantage. Sometimes with real solid success.

According to Baseball Reference, he has a 3.4 WAR thus far this year which is good enough for 10th highest out of all AL pitchers. Add 4 more years of team control and he becomes a very valuable commodity.

But I don't think he's a top 10 pitcher, I think he's hit his peak, we'd be selling high if we trade him as we other teams will also see his value, and I would prefer not to have these same clowns in the field supporting our pitchers next year. Just my opinion.

Just my opinion. I don't think he's a top 10 pitcher...but if he's in the top-20 to top-30 range already at his age, with 5 years of control waiting...that's incredible. The estimated value of 1 WAR right now is something in the range of $4-$5 million. That means Jose Quintana doing this is a $16 million+ pitcher right now.
