Robbie wants to stay

From the Daily Southtown:

In fact, Alomar has enjoyed his brief stay on the South Side to the point that he wants to finish his career here, even if it is at something less than market value.

Alomar is in the final year of an agreement that will pay him $8 million, of which the Sox are liable for only the minimum pro-rated share.

"I would like to stay here. It would be a great place for me to finish my career," Alomar said. "I am blessed to have made a lot of money in my career. Money is not the issue. Respect is the issue."

Damn good news. :cheers

:o, wow. Having him in a Sox uniform for the rest of his career would definitely be solid. Although, I'm sure the presence of his brother has made a big difference to him. Sandy has played well this year -- maybe the Sox catching duo in '04 will remain Sandy and Miguel?

:cheers, Robbie!

Free Agents:

Thomas

Valentin (Clause for 575 ABs)

Colon

Alomar

Everett

Loaiza (Clause for 3.5 million)

Thomas probably will stay. Valentin could stay under a more minimum contract. Colon likes it here but since Magglio's salary rises next year it is highly unlikely he stays. With a paycut for Alomar at a veterans salary (2-4 million) we could retain him. Everett will probably not return, but that is ok because of Rowand's success.

Relievers

Schoenweis

Sullivan

Gordon

Do the Sox keep Sullivan and Gordon and Schoenweis go?

it never hurts to look ahead to next year.

Not giving up on this year.

but part of the fun is putting the next team together.

Jeremy Reed 2 for 5 with three ribbies last night.

He'll be in the outfield mix next season. Book it.

can't remember the last time somebody finished the season at .400 in the minors with nearly 230 at bats, but he is at .407.

I hear a lot of players talk about "being respected", and it's usually tied directly to dollar signs.

If Robbie says respect does not = money, then how is respect measured?

The fans seem to like him, teammates, management, everyone seems to be VERY happy to have Robbie on the team.

Does popularity = respect?

If not, then what?

We should also remember we would be signing the 2004-2005 or 2006 edition of Robbie Alomar. Amazing how when people get near retirement they are looking for respect, and a cozy place to ride out the years. Who says we wouldn't wind up with the 2003 NY Mets version? I'm not that excited about signing him. I hope I'm wrong and he's another Fisk. Carl fixed his troubles while in Texas and I believe he proved he wants to play and is a good clubhouse presence, only a rough stretch will expose Robbie's current character.

All his talk about needing a pennant race to get him motivated again kinda scares me away from signing him for next year. Like someone said, he'll be another season older and what if the Sox have a 10-15 April? Or 23-30 after May? What kind of Alomar do we see then? Probably the one that New Yorkers couldn't say good-bye to quick enough.

I totally disagree. Sign him unless the money is unreasonable. I cannot remember actual defense being played at second base for many, many years. This guy stepped in and our entire defense stepped it up another notch or two. There are very few players that lift the play of others around him and we all witnessed Robbie literally lift the defensive play of the infield.

Add to that his solid lead off presence and his savvy base running, as well as balls to the wall first base slide....

Just sign him, please. How about a nice two year contract with an option at the end?

Forkit!

Let's see what unfolds over the next 5 weeks. We may looking to run him out on a rail by the end of the month. Right now I think he and Valentin can add soemthing over the next two years. If Reed and Rowand step up we need defense and smart players, we could have Robbie as a shell of himself.

Reed-Lee-Thomas-Ordonez-Konerko(Rowand)-Valentin-Crede-Olivo-Alomar

The whole thing will boil down to budget. What we can spend will be spent. An increase from this year may be in the cards and it will go Garland and Buerhle. The more games we play the more revenue we get the increased liklihood we will have a larger payroll.

Alomar is already my favorite player on the sox. IF you ever want a team player, this is the guy. He knows how to play the game. :snr

Schow and Sullivan both have team options for 2k4 right?  I think Gordon does as well.  Anyone have anymore info there?

Scho is arbitration eligible for one more year (And he doens't make much as it is, nor is he inline for a big raise). Sullivan has a 3.5 mill option (Or 3 mill...I forget).

As far as fair market value for Robby, I'd say roughly 4 or 5 mill. That may be a bit high too, but I don't know if someone will pay more because of his name.

I'd give him like a 2 year 5 mill deal with some incentives.

I tend to agree with the one year only camp. If the NY Robbie Alomar came back there would be no way to get rid of him.

I love Robbie for what he does on the field. I think he is pretty rude off the field with the fans though. This past kid's day many kids got there real real early to be guarenteed to get Robbie's autograph and when everybody was waiting in line, the security guard says Robbie does not feel well and will not be signing autographs today. He also played last sunday when a graffanino or a harris could of played if he really was'nt feeling good. For how much he gets paid the least he can do is sign autographs for a half an hour. Kids wait 2 hours before the gates open and they can only get Sandy Alomar's autograph? It's ridiculous. Can I write a letter to White Sox personnel and what do you think they would do?
