Sox Sign Jose Abreu - 6/$68 million

Hahn did say in his phone chat not to expect much news on free agents for several weeks. It appears Abreu's signing isn't imminent. At least with the Sox. They will talk to Paulie in November, and he is currently interviewing hitting coaches. Wants an organizational philosophy like they have with pitching.

He said the biggest need is offense.Went from 4th to last in runs scored. Did seem to pin at least a portion of that on Manto, and did say they would make some personnel changes. Someone asked about 3rd, he said a Keppinger/Gillespie platoon could work and mentioned Semien as a 3rd baseman. So really, pretty much what everyone already knew.

Have they ever paid big money for a free agent? Knowing them they'll sign Casey McGehee at a bargain basement price and he'll end up putting up 'good numbers".

The Andrew Friedman regime absolutely has not spent big money in free agency. Draft, sign for a few years into free agency, trade before deal is concluded, repeat.

It will be interesting when Longoria's deal gets close to being up.

Eventually, that isn't going to work anymore and if they can't, at that point, throw some money at their problems, they are going to be bad again for a long time.

The Rays are one team I don't think needs to worry about the impacts on their franchise of a couple 90 loss seasons in a row while top draft picks are acquired.

You mean in 2023? That doesn't even seem real, but that's when Longoria's a free agent. There'll probably be robots in the league.

Cuban slugger Jose Abreu has narrowed his list of possible destinations to three teams and could sign within the next two weeks, according to multiple industry sources.

The Astros, Red Sox, and White Sox have emerged as the frontrunners to sign the 26-year-old first baseman to a deal expected to be in the $70 million range. The Rangers, Giants, and Marlins were among the teams to express strong interest but are no longer in the running.

Sox really need this guy to start showing fans they care about turning this around. If they get him, combine that with a Viciedo/Beckham Santiago blockbuster trade for a catcher/third baseman and reliever or some combination and we might be on the right track IMO.

Their not trading Viciedo but possibly Santiago and/or Beckham. But this deal will be 6/70

Everyone is saying the magic number is 70, which is probably why the Rangers will swoop in and offer 6 yrs/$75M.

I don't believe that he has really trimmed his list down to 3 teams already, I think that's just hot air to get one of the other teams to scramble and offer more.

Seems pretty legit when they allow mlb.com to put out a story that says multiple industry sources say he's down to three teams.

He'll be an Astro.

We'll see. I guess it's a good thing this gets sorted out before Konerko makes his big decision.

If this really gets wrapped up in 2 weeks, that'd be awesome, especially if it means Abreu signs w/ the Sox because then it will be a clean cut for Konerko. We don't have a spot, and we don't have offer him a pity deal. He can retire clean.

Why do you say that? He can very easily sign with the White Sox. Astros do have Singleton on the way , so I honestly don't know why their going after him.

Olney just tweeted that the Red Sox don't expect to sign him and that the Astros and White Sox are seen as the front runners

Just not getting my hopes up.

But if the Sox do sign him, I hope he's a force. The Sox need some relevant offensive players in the game.

That's why I think he will sign with the Sox. Abreu can see that other players from Cuba (Contreras, Alexei, and Viciedo) have been successful with the Sox and a high market team that will fit right in the middle of the order

Olney just tweeted Astros are skeptical about their chances of signing Abreu. Made a strong offer but all but certain they fell short. White Sox?

I like the sound of that

Yeah here is the tweet.
