lasttriptotulsa
While the reports that keep coming out are sounding better and better for the Sox, I still would not be the least bit surprised to see him sign with the Red Sox or Rangers. They both just like to throw around money too much. I also wouldn't be surprised to see some random team sign him from out of the blue kind of how Cespedes ended up with the A's when nobody felt they were serious contenders. Didnt the Cespedes negotiations last until right before Spring Training? I think the last minute blind rush had a lot to do with Cespedes ending up with the A's, as well as the fact that the A's gave him a relatively short contract that allowed him to start in the majors right away. 2nd_city_saint787
Yup, based on what Olney has said it looks like the Sox are the biggest front runner. I LIKE. Based on the tweet about the Astros, and the words "fell short"(past tense) I wonder if this is based off the whole "blind bid" we heard about, and that this will be announced sooner rather than later. Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN 1m Source say Astros are skeptical about their chances of signing Jose Abreu. Made a strong offer but all but certain they fell short. W. Sox? It can't be that easy, can it? I got to admit at this point it would a huge disappointment to me if he signed elsewhere.

But we still don't know if he's any good at Major League Baseball. There are some people who question this, saying he might be like a .250 30 homer, .800 OPS guy, which is better than your run of the mill 1B but not by much. There have been a lot of reports too that they are juicing the holy bejeezus out of the ball down in Cuba too which is the reason for a lot of these inflated numbers. southsider2k5
Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN 2m The Astros did, in fact, make a hard bid on Abreu while falling short: Heard their bid was between $50 million and $60 million.

He did hit some monster homers in the WBC though (3 in 25 AB), which to me shows that his power is probably legit.

If the Sox spend my predicted $72 mil on him and he puts up an OPS in the .700's his first year, I'm going to be blaming the White Sox scouting department and Kenny Williams in particular. He makes a ton of sense but your putting a helluva lot of money on the word of your scouts. They have to be right.

flavum
If he's a right-handed version of a younger, healthier Kendrys Morales, I'd take that. Abreu looks like he was fat a couple years ago. Looks slimmer in the WBC clips I've seen.
fathom
If the White Sox were to get him for something like 6/70, I'd love it. It's a lot of money but nothing crippling if he's a bust.

If it is lower in the first half of the year as he figures out MLB, but improves as the season goes along, I'll be OK with that as this is pretty much considered a rebuilding year. southsider2k5
Scott Merkin @scottmerkin 3m Abreu certainly fits what Rick Hahn has been talking about in that he could help the team be competitive in '14 but is more than a stopgap The White Sox weren't pursuing free agents who only were short term fixes. almagest
Stop it you guys I'm getting excited. Soxfest
ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the Astros have fallen short in the bidding for Cuban first baseman Jose Abreu. Olney hears that the Astros bid between $50-60 million while indications are that the winning bid will be around $70 million. The Red Sox don't expect to sign Abreu, so unless there's a sleeper team in the mix, this leaves the White Sox as the likely favorites. Balta1701
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 04:37 PM) It's probably been mentioned, but does anyone know how was he viewed in relation to Puig and Cespedes before the latter two had their success in MLB? This guy was viewed as the best hitter Cuba had to offer. A better hitter than either of them. More complete, more developed, one of the best players Cuba has ever produced. Somewhere at the beginning of this thread there's a post confirming he defected and I reply to it something along the lines of "wait, when Cespedes signed everyone said that he was the best player in Cuba other than this one guy...is this that guy?"
