Looks like they're being represented by:

P- Chris Bassitt

P- Charlie Leesman

P- Stephen McCray

P- Kevin Vance

2B- Micah Johnson

SS- Marcus Semien

I'm stunned none of our outfielders got sent there.

That seems like very much the right list to me. Hopefully Trayce and Jacobs are AFL candidates for next year.

Not sure if serious.

Leesman and McCray surprise me. I'm guessing they want to see Leesman given relief opportunities because he could very easily end up in the pen next season. Not sure what they're doing with McCray. The other 4, especially Bassitt, Johnson, and Semien, seemed to be mortal locks.

I think Jacobs and Barnum should have been included...

That would be way early for the AFL for Barnum. They may very well send him to the lower-level Arizona fall league and perhaps some winterball as well. Generally the Sox seem to use the AFL for guys who are getting close to the bigs.

Jacobs I could see. Barnum is still pretty young and playing his first full year of pro ball. It is still really early for him to be there.

Jacobs has been in a slump for a while. He's putting up a .607 OPS at BHam right now and this will wind up being his longest season to date once the playoffs happen. He isn't ready for a promotion to AAA so I don't think he's a good AFL candidate yet either.

Semien is a slight surprise to me. With the season he's had, the only argument I can see for sending him is gearing him up for tough stuff so he can be on the squad next year... but I don't know that its necessary.

The others all make sense.

Barnum barely has a single year of pro ball under his belt and he's a teenager. At least a year from being ready for that, if not 2 or 3.

I agree Jacobs would have made sense. Or Winiarski.

I think the Sox are just trying to figure out what they have with Semien. He was such a surprise this season that they probably just want more evaluation time.

Moreso they also need to see what he can do against near MLB competition, because it will impact whether they take offers on Alexei this offseason.

I see that Barnum is probably too young/raw for the AFL but whatever they can do to keep Barnum playing they should do. He needs all the ABs he can get whatever avenue they come from.

He will be in Arizona for fall instructs. Talked with a scout about this very thing, and while he couldn't confirm officially... it was obvious.

Says all you need to know about Thompson, Walker, Jacobs and the young outfield talent the Sox have drafted/collected in recent years.

HELP!

Sox still have one more open slot to play with on the roster, for a played TBD. Jacobs has to be high on the list of possibilities, so he may yet go. Thompson has already played AFL, and rarely do they send players twice.

And Walker was awful this year, regardless of whether he was a former first round pick. Frankly, I could care less with these guys who were former first rounders and sandwich picks. Yes, it sucks that they suck and whatever, but the reason people say that the MLB draft is a crapshoot is because it IS a crapshoot. You are hoping to get 2 players out of 40 drafted to make it and stick in the majors, regardless of what round. That's 5%. Yes, a 1st round pick is going to be among the more talented players, but talent still takes refinement and a ton of it too and these guys were raw because, if they were able to develop and use their tools in game, they would have turned out to be top 5-10 players at their positions in the game, but they did not, and they've fallen. It's not the end of the world.

(Even so, Walker has done some decent things this year too...he's walking a lot and stealing bases, and if he can cut his K% down to below 25%, he's got a shot to make it too, but we're a long ways from that)

Thompson has struggled in the second half, but frankly he's done enough this year to keep me relatively excited about him too. Cut his K% (down to a manageable 23.7%, which is still on the high side) and kept his BB% good (10.5%), so the idea of his numbers improving next year, and significantly so, is not out of the question.

Jacobs is the same sort of flyer, but even more so. The Sox got him for a 36 year old reliever with 3 months left on his contract. If he turns into ANYTHING, even a trade piece, he's worth it, because the Sox were going to lose Thornton no matter what.

  • 2 weeks later...

Last year, Mitchell at 23 posted a 127 wRC+ in AA while playing great defense and stealing some bases. There was some hope there, of something. A fourth outfielder, perhaps. It's really confusing how he completely fell off the wagon

I certainly am not suggesting they release him - I think he needs another shot in 2014. But the AFL berth is confusing to me. Seems to me, his best bets would either be taking the offseason off to get his head straight... or putting him in Fall Instructs to work on things. The AFL idea is just bizarre.

Is Mitchell out of options or something like that? i.e. Where the team has to make a decision on releasing him by the end of training camp next year? If that's the case I could see them trying as many shots in the dark as possible to see if they can get something out of him.

I don't believe so - when would the options have started? He hasn't seen the majors. He does need to be on the 40, since he was drafted in 2009. But he's not a minor league FA for at least a couple more years. As long as he's on the 40, they can do what they want to with him. Even if he's not, I'm not convinced anyone would pick him up at this point.

This. There is literally no reason to release Mitchell until there is someone who actually needs that spot. That isn't the case right now.
