and no rex they did not meet with mark before hand to discuss this.. mark found out when it was announced and then went to talk......

That's what I don't get...... If you are going to move a guy to a different spot in the rotation, move him to a different spot in the batting order, etc., why in the hell would you not call the player into your office and let him know what you are thinking and why you plan to make a change, BEFORE you speak to the press??

At worst, if JM was asked the question before he talked to Mark, he could have said "We're discussing different possibilites the off day has afforded us, but no decision has yet been made."

i couldnt agree more..... but you know how things go around here ......right?? lol

Several of the players were supposed to tour the observation deck that morning. They were minutes away from heading over there when the 1st plane hit. 15 more minutes.. very surreal. Since the phone service was messed up it was a few hours before families got to talk to their sons/husbands. Very tense time.

Did not know that. That is, undoubtedly, a very, very, very scary thing.

When those plans hit on 9/11, I remember thinking that I hoped all the Sox were safe. But, no, I hadn't heard about this. As tragic as 9/11 was, that would have just about done me in.

You actually thought about the Sox? Professional sports was the FARTHEST thing from my mind that awful day.

I knew they were in NY. So yes, I thought about the guys on the team. Hell, I was already an emotional wreck before the planes hit. That day would have been my late son's 20th birthday. Between that, the tragedy and worrying about the Sox, yep, I was messed up.

Sorry about your son.

That morning, I didn't know what to think. It was definitely the worst day of my life, and I don't think sports entered my mind once.

Thanks. I can only say 09/11/01 was one of the worst days of my life.

Speaking of the Sox and 9/11, though, I remember hearing something later on that a Sox player (I think it was Aaron Rowand) called someone else on the team and wanted to know when they were leaving for the Stadium. Whoever he called said something to the effect of "Are you kidding? Turn your TV on". Rowand obviously was oblivious to what was going on.

Hard to believe that was nearly 2 years ago. :o

The 2nd anniversary of that day is fast approaching. I hope that day passes with no "sequels".

There were about a million things that ran through everyones minds, all at once that morning. It doesn't surprise me at all that sports was one of them.

I thought about them totally by accident. But not at all as a baseball team. I had gotten a ride home with Crystal the night before they left (her and the kids went with Ray to NY - for the tour no less) and I just kept remembering how excited she was to go. The second the first plane hit I just started dialing their cell phones..

Didn't get in touch with her for 5 hours.

Gives me the chills just thinking about it.
