Without seeing him throw, sounds like Jon Garland type of pitcher, pitching to contact and getting lots of balls in play.

And it sounds like he has the stuff to get strikeouts.

I like having young pitchers in the pipeline.

I said he would take a big jump this year, and he did. I also get the feeling we see him in Chicago next year at some point. I think we will look back on him and wonder how he wasn't a ranked prospect.

To be fair, he was considered a potential top half of the first round pick going into his last year, but just put up bad numbers leading up to the actual draft. That's why he slipped

I sent a note to Stoltz. One thing I was surprised he didn't even acknowledge was the possibility that Beck may have been focused on specific pitches or specific aspects of pitching, then was let loose in AA. This pattern has occurred a number of times in the Sox org with pitchers in recent years, and I don't think it is a coincidence.

Good article though.

Really, really good point. The Sox, for better or for worse, have a system on how they treat minor leaguers. They obviously don't give a rip about rankings and stats. They really have specific goals in mind for each player, and if they generate ranks and stats, that is great, but it doesn't really matter to them. Pitchers work on specific pitches and getting innings for the most part. Even if they know a guy is going to be a reliever at the next level, they still use them as a starter to try to develop secondary pitches.
