Why's it mixed signals? The rumors all week were that Konerko would meet with the media and tell them that he hadn't made up his mind yet.

If that is the case no need to call a press conference to do that. He could say that with beat writers before or after game.

I think quite the opposite. What more is Konerko going to accomplish? At the rate he's on, he's going to have to play a minimum of 5 more years to get to 500 homers. He's not going to win any individual awards. He's got a World Series ring.

Thome stuck around as long as he did to try and get a ring. He never was able to. But he got plenty of accolades - a silver slugger, 600+ homers - and decided that it was time to go (and also, no teams would sign him because he wanted to play this year too).

In other words, Thome played til they ripped the jersey off his back. they told him he couldn't play any more, ala Fisk. Some players are like that. Is Paulie? We shall see. I think he might be.

Why is comcast showing this one then?

Cause it's the end of the season and he's PAUL KONERKO. Everybody wants an update.

This is terrible treatment by the Sox. Call a press conference a day in advance, so the media can broadcast it live... to tell them the exact same thing they've been saying for months? Either we are all being faked out here, or the Sox completely bungled this.

They didn't bungle it. Fathom is right. He's doing a normal press session. Blame the media for televising it. He doesn't want to do 40 one on one interviews. This happens a lot on BIG STORIES and Paulie giving the end of season update on his status is a pretty big story. Blame the media for putting it on the radio; Paulie and the Sox didn't ask for that.

White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said Friday that the club will meet with Paul Konerko in two weeks to discuss his future.

Previous reports indicated that Konerko could come to some sort of decision this weekend, but he apparently wants to hear the team's plan for the future before making it final. For what it's worth, Hahn said they plan to spend money to acquire an impact free agent this winter.
